Allergic rhinitis?

Hi mga sis,

I have a 2 yrs old boy with AR and asthma, yung AR nya pasumpong sumpong lang. And almost 3 weeks na daily routine nya. And also sa asthma nya same din nka-dalawang pulmo pedia na nga ako pero hindi pa din absolutely gumaling pero nag-lowdown nman ang both sa nararamdaman nya.

Mga sis advise naman kung dapat bang mag-expect ako na mag-lessen yung nararamdaman nya?

Depends on what treatment he is on right now. You have to manage his AR well so that his Asthma gets better since Asthma exacerbation is a complication of uncontrolled or poorly treated Allergic rhinitis.
Do you have any idea as to what triggers his Asthma and his AR? If yes, then allergen avoidance helps a lot.
Since he has both Asthma and Allergic rhinitis, then I suggest that you bring him to an Allergologist already.

my son has AR then naka tatlong pedia kami bago nagamot yung ubo at sipon niya. he is taking montelukast for 3 months.he starts taking it may 14 then noong july 4 nagka ubo at sipon siya at it last 2 weeks then after two weeks balik nman ubo sipon niya  yung sipon nya may pagka greenish. then now may sipon na naman siya though hindi naman congested yung ilong niya noong sat kasi parati siya nag sneeze then untill kahapon then this morning may sipon na. malapit na kaming mag 3 months sa montelukast. may mga gabi kasi na hindi ko siya nabibigyan ng monelukast kasi may times na maaga siya natulog. makaka intterupt ba yon sa effectiveness ng gamot?.. pwede ba painomin ko siya ng anti-allergy?. disudrin kasi yung binibigay ko sa kanya. may anti-allergy din.. TIA.

^ I suggest you have your child checked up by your pedia before giving any type of medicine.
Also, yes, if you are not able to give montelukast daily, it affects the performance of the medicine.
Since you've been to 3 pedias already, then it's time to bring your son to an allergologist for proper evaluation and management.

thank you doc leletmd and one thing doc. if he still on montelukast may possibilities din po ba na magkaka sipon pa din yung anak ko?. and lastly doc the pedia of my son prescribed him montelukast for  3 months but yong pedia ng daughter ko prescribe lang niya 10 pcs lang ng montelukast at bedtime. TIA doc

i have asthma as well as allergic rhinitis.. and my daughter have the rhinitis as well.. although nag-manifest lang nitong 3 y.o. na sya. she is on maintenance ng montelukast for 6 months and maganda naman effect. usually change of weather ang nagtrigger sa kanya na magka-runny nose and ubo.. sana naman itong newborn ko hindi nya makuha sakit ko..

hello sis! kahit ba naka montelukast anak mo may mga times ba na magkaka sipon at ubo? anak ko kasi kahit naka montelukast siya ngayon may mga times na sisiponin siya lalo na if mainit ang panahon.

hi mga sis, my baby is one month old..hirap sya huminga at night parang my nakabara, dinala ko sya sa pedia at sabi nya congested lang daw ang nose ni baby and recommended disudrin drops 3x a day for 5 days pero pang 4th day n nya parang ganun pa rin,, symptoms na kaya un ng allergic rhinitis kasi ang tatay nya merong ganun e.. kung congested lang nose ano kaya cause nun? nakakaworried kasi at d na sya makatulog ng maayos..TIA

Babies 1 to 2 months of age are really prone to getting colds and nasal congestion due to their immature nasal anatomy and small nasal openings.
Hindi pa pwedeng magdiagnose ng Allergic rhinitis at that age because of that. Also, ang allergic rhinitis, episodic. The symptoms appear after exposure to the offending allergens and disappear when you remove the allergen. Initial symptoms are: sneezing, watery nasal discharge and nasal itchiness. Nasal congestion occurs kapag matagal na ang symptoms.
Since your husband has history of allergic rhinitis, there is a 20 to 40% chance that your baby may get it later on. If both parents have history of allergies, the risk increases to 40 - 60%. I strongly suggest breastfeeding as a way of preventing or delaying the onset of allergies.
I suggest you bring your baby back for follow up since as you said, initial management has not helped your baby.

Montelukast is meant to be used/taken as a maintenance medication kaya usually around 3 to 6 months talaga ang bigay nito. If around 10 days lang kasi, wala ka pang masyadong effect na makikita kasi mabagal mag-effect ang montelukast.
The patient can still have cough and colds while on montelukast. Cough and colds may be due to infection, which means walang kinalaman sa allergy and kahit naka montelukast, kapag nagka-infection, magkaka-cough and colds pa rin.
Cough and colds can also be allergic pa rin, which means that montelukast is not enough to control the symptoms of the patient and dapat ireview ang meds niya or bigyan ng different treatment.
During the 3 months treatment, did you bring your son to the pedia for follow up? Importante kasi yun to determine response to treatment.

thank you doc leletmd.. hindi ko pa po siya naibalik sa pedia since noong may when he prescribed montelukast. na notice ko sa anak ko if masyadong dusty or maka smell siya ng amoy ng citronella doon siya mag statart mag sneeze then after magka sipon na maski he still on motelukast kastair.. babalik ko nalang siya sa pedia niya. thank you doc!

hi sisses! share ko lang kasi yung 3-month baby ko me runny nose at nagluluha mata, tapos parang namamaga yung mata nya. naisip ko baka namana nya sa kin kasi ganun din ako. allergic rhinitis ba yun? pag more than 3 days na ipapa check ko na sya.

These are the patients who will report sneezing and/or nasal congestion early in the morning or late at night pero okay na the rest of the day.
If the whole day ang sipon and nasal discharge is yellowish rather than watery, then it is most likely not Allergic rhinitis.

doc let, ganun din anak ko may allergic rhinitis..pinainum lang ni pedia ng alnix in 1 month tapos tinigil ko at immuzinc..2 months lang daw kasi un dapat..paano po kung til now may allergy pa rin lumalabas sa kanya? pero sa bahay po may alnix palagi kaya pag may lumalabas na allergy pinapainum na rin namin.ok lang po ba un doc [textspeak!] ganun? ano kaya pwede pang immune sa ganun? salamat doc. ur a big help

I've been suffering from allergic rhinitis for years (since high school if I remember right).  I just take Claritin when it happens but didn't know until recently that I can use  a nasal spray to prevent it.  The brand recommended to me was Avamys.  I haven't had any sneezing fits since.  All those years that I get it after a plane ride (temp change) or cleaning my room (dust mites) could have been avoided!

Joining! Nice to know we have this thread here.  I was recently diagnosed with allergic rhinitis (during the habagat days). Medyo late ata ang onset sakin, I'm already in my early 30s but I had post nasal drip before and skin allergies for the longest time. Dami kong natutunan about AR sa thread na to.

^ me too, lately na lang din lumala ang AR ko, but I have asthma since birth. Ive been taking antihistamines pero parang lately di na sya umeeffect

my child was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and was given avamys nose spray as maintenance medication. A little history lang: My son since he was born monthly meron siya sipon at ubo. so monthly he was on cough and cold meds and since hindi siya gumagaling doon natutuloy sa antibiotics. So  monthly cough and cold medicines, antihistamines, antibiotics. So lumalabas he is never well. As parents we feel na baka may ibang cause and this is not normal so we went to a pulmo pedia who told us to see an allergologist. They gave him a skin test and did some checkups. He was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis. He was given avamys nasal spray as maintenance medicine. he was supposed to take it once a day for a 3 months and then we will start to taper and the will not use anymore. ang nangyayari whenever we start to taper nagsisimula ulit ang pagsisipon niya na natutuloy sa ubo hanggang sa lala na (sore throat, needs antibiotics, etc...). So we were advised na huwag na siya itaper and use it regularly once a day. Very mild ang improvement. Nagkakasakit pa din siya every 2months sometimes even monthly. Kapag sinipon kase siya nagdederetso na ito sa ubo then malalang ubo and sore throat, tumatamlay na and matagal siya gumaling at least. minsan ang rest period lang niya from sickness (meaning ito ang days na wala siyang sakit) is a week and then maririnig nanaman namin na ayan na may runny nose nanaman and then later may ubo na. Because of this we were prescribed aerius syrup to be taken once a day. This was also supposed to be taken only for a month and then stopped. While he was on aerius with avamys ok siya. but whenever we stop the aerius ayan uulit nanaman ang sipon. So we were advised to take aerius regularly with the avamys. So he is now using this medicines for over a year now.
Our concern is since medicines ito siyempre worried kami on the long term use (may side effects iyan for sure). Nakailang doctors na kami (pedia, allergologist) and they say that it's ok to take it long term. it's very safe. Some take it for more than 4years. But we have also encountered a few doctors who disagree with this and they even say that allergic rhinitis is not to be treated. Mas ok pa daw na monthly mag antibiotic ang anak ko kaysa sa naka longterm na antihistamine na aerius and avamys.
As a parent i do worry about my child if we are taking the right path and we have chosen the right decision. tinitingnan ko din siya and he is alright. Normal naman siyang bata. Ever since he was on the meds he rarely gets any colds and cough. As in 3 times in a year na lang siya kung magkaroon and in those instances once pa lang siya gumamit nang antibiotics. Siyempre ayoko na lagi na lang may sakit ang anak ko pero worried din ako sa mga long term medicines. bata pa ang anak ko ( 8years old), in the long run i don't know if this will do any harm to him.
to combat the allergies nga before na hindi pa siya nakamaintenance ang dami na namin ginawa, hypoallergenic beddings, air purifier with ionizer, frequent palit of sheets and curtains, washing them in hot water, keeping his room clean and his things, nakakapagod....
Has anyone gone through this... Gusto ko na magstop maintenance meds niya and hindi ko alam kung sinong doctor and susundin ko (some say to use it regularly, some say stop and we will just treat him when he gets sick again with regular cold/cough/antihistamine/antibiotic when he gets sick)

pajoin! i also have allergic rhinits which causes me to have frequent sinusitis and that's the complication we were trying to prevent back then! sobrang tindi niya when i was in gradeschool and i guess after surviving the population that is part of the college life i think lumakas na ang aking resistance. now i dont get allergic rhinitis with the very changeable weather and if exposed to sobrang daming dust na lang ako inaatake nito. back then i'd go to a clinic/doctor (my parents are doctors so going to another doctor/clinic is quite an experience for me) and wait long hours to see this really good and famous (sabi ni daddy pioneer daw siya ng ortholaryngology sa pinas) then he prescribed this spray thing which i spray INSIDE my nose everyday. really weird, pero effective! kasi daw if i dont baka daw magkapolyps pa ako (yes tinakot niya ako) sa may sinuses ko and kelangan operahan and the way to operate daw is to lift my entire face area, flip it back so that the polyps and sinuses can be seen. so scary so i took the medicine diligently. hahaha.
