If this is your baby's 1st bout of illness, then it is still too early to diagnose them as having allergic rhinitis.
Kailangan kasi repeated episodes of runny nose, clear nasal discharge, sneezing and nasal congestion in response to an allergen exposure para mo sabihin na may allergic rhinitis ang isang patient.
A classic example would be a child having repeated sneezing fits upon waking up in the morning. Symptoms would disappear later on in the day, but would reappear late at night or upon waking up in the morning.
Why do the symptoms appear only during those certain times? Because that is the time that they are being exposed to their main allergen, which is most likely the house dust mite since it is during that time that the house dust mites are most active.
Antibiotics are not part of the management of allergic rhinitis, unless there is a infectious complication already (otitis media or sinusitis).

Hi Guys,

Just want to share narin kasi I have 4 yrs old kid..Nagkaroon na siya ng primary complex when she was 1 y/o kasi di siya nag gain ng weight as in every month namin pacheck up so the pedia requested an xray dun nakita 9 months ang gamutan then i thought ok na ko..2 y/o naman every month lagi siyang may sipon or ubo so check up na naman [textspeak!] asthma daw so nabigla ako bakit ganun agad..pumunta kami sa pedia pulmo nag TBA (tidal breathing a???) siya so diagnosed siya na may asthma..so seretide puff 2x a day, montelukast granules 1 day until now..meron narin siyang allergic rhinitis kapag umaatake yun muconase, nasonex spray sa nose 2x a day..nalulungkot ako sa nangyayari kasi ngayon meron siyang otitis media naman..di na ko natapos.. Feeling ko napaka ewan kong nanay pero I tried naman pagaralan pero di nga control ang environment and weather..I feel so helpless kababalik ko lang sa work 6 months plang from 4 years na plain housewife...ngayon naiisip ko ako nalang kaya ulit ang magalaga sa anak ko para mas natutukan ko siya.

thanks! 8 months ang baby ko and first illness nya to ever. Cough and colds started last August 22 pa. Hanggang ngayon walang improvement despite the meds...  hindi inexplain nung pedia why kailangan ng antibiotics. na-wirdohan nga din ako kung bakit meron.

sis we had the same dilemma... after my baby's flu shot, nagkataon siguro na epekto ng bakuna yun tapos ng weather, nagka ubo't sipon ang baby ko. mga 1 week nag mucosolvan lang kami. more on viral infection daw, tapos tumigil lang ng 2 days tapos ayan na naman, pero ubo na lang. pero sabi ng pedia, it could be more on bacterial infection kaya nag antibitics na rin si baby- co amoxiclav... ok naman na si baby ngayon. super ingat na lang... nag eevolve na kasi ang mga sakit ngayon nakakainis!

I suggest you try to identify your kid's allergic and non - allergic triggers. Once you are able to identify it, you can institute measures to avoid the triggers and mababawasan ang attacks ng kid mo.

My son uses avymys nasal spray. How long will this take effect? the dr said there would be a dramatic change with my son. It's getting worse. We don't see any improvement. Hindi ko gusto yung steroidal spray na yun I have to continue it for a week more. Mas ok ang effect ng montelukast sa kanya how long can this med be taken ba? the dr prescribed kastair before it was only 12php. Doubtful kami kasi when she asked me what brand of montelukast  are you using? sabi namin montiget then sabi niya masyado daw mura yun nagdududa daw siya. Then sabi niya lets changed brands she gave kastair mas mura pa ito nung binili ko. I gave my son singulair naglessen ang attacks niya. Big difference talaga. Is it possible na different brands doesn't work the same?
My concern is what if pwede itake yung singulair nang matagalan na instead of the spray?

^ How long has he been using Avamys NS?
With steroid nasal sprays, you would usually see initial effects 2 to 4 hours from first use. Within the 1st week, there should be improvement of symptoms but you have to continue it on a tapering dose for 2 to 3 months to have long lasting effects.
I suggest you discuss your concerns with your child's doctor. Baka there is a need to review the technique on how to use it properly, etc.

I am also on Avamys (Fluticasone furoate) + Montelukast + Levocetirizine.  The Avamys and Levocetirizine were prescribed by the ENT for my sinusitis.  Strangely though, the Avamys did not seem to help me.  In fact, I have a cough and my nose is clogged.  I will have to see my regular doctor (pulmo specialist, Dr. Bella Siasoco) soon.  It could also be a viral infection kasi.  Hay, ang gastos sa meds sa mga kagaya ko.

@lilsaintsmom, my sons and I have tried many brands of Montelukast - Singulair, Kastair, Montiget, Kastorion.  For me, pare-pareho lang silang effective.  We are sticking to Montiget 4 mg for my sons and Kastorion 10 mg for me for now.

leletmd: 4 days na niya tinatake. Na explain naman sakin yung tamang pag gamit, it has to be on the side then singhot. My cough ngayon son ko halos a week na laging nagigising pag natutulog gabi gabi na. Ubo ng ubo mayat maya tapos parang nagchochoke na siya minsan.

^ If it still doesn't improve within a week from first use, then I suggest you bring your son for follow up with his doctor. Baka may ibang cause ang cough or kailangan ng additional meds. It is important that your doctor gets to re-assess your child. Your doctor would be the best person to say what the next step should be.

Ganun na nga siguro magwait lang kami for ilang days nalang. Di nako magaantay ng another week if ganung persistent parin duwal ng duwal parang lalabas na lalamunan niya. Doc says post nasal drip. Allergies run in the family both sides kawawa ang son ko. Is it possible na ma-outgrown ang allergies ng mga bata?or is it there forever na? Allergies ko kasi later in my teens na nadevelop.

Grabe attacks ko now eveyday na nga siya, ginamit ko yung avamys ng anak ko effective siya sakin
Nakakahawa ba yung attacks? if ever natrigger yun sa akin mahahawa siya?

^ Caution lang, you shouldn't share nasal sprays. Ang daming organisms na nakatira sa nose kaya if you share nasal sprays, pwedeng magkahawaan ng respiratory and skin infections.
Allergies per se, hindi nakakahawa. If you have the same allergens, though, pwede kayong sabay magka-attack.
Kapag allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma, lifelong ang allergies but there will be times that there will be no symptoms (during the time you are not exposed to your triggers).
Usually, nadidiagnose ang allergic rhinitis sa adolescent period or sa early 20s. Mas maaga nag-mamanifest ang atopic dermatitis and asthma kasi.
Usually, pag may atopic dermatitis na hindi maayos ang treatment and sobrang exposed sa allergens, pwedeng masensitize ang lungs at maging asthma then later on, allergic rhinitis. That's what we call the allergic march.

hi mga sis! just want to share lang din.. my daughter also has allergic rhinitis, naka maintenance din sya ng singulair montelukast as per her pedia's advice... pero may time na inubo sya ng halos 3 months na di gumagaling. i consulted a pulmo pedia, dun na diagnose na may primary complex ang baby ko. 6 months na gamutan, in fairness gumaling sya at biglang lumobo at natuto naring kumain ang super phikan kong anak! but then again after ng treatment namin, biglang inubo at sinipon uli, this time pangit ang ubo nya para bang ubo ng matandang maraming plema! so scared then na baka bumalik ang PC nya. i get back to her pulmo-pedia, ordinary cough lang daw and he prescribed loraped or dimetapp and meptin for cough... after 1 week sa awa ng Dyos, magaling na sya!

@leletmd, thank you for your explanation about the allergic march.  I am taking prednisone again (just for 5 days at 20 mg, twice a day), together with Avamys (twice a day na per Dr. De Vera), Budecort (twice a day too) and Montelukast.  Grabe kasi may ubo, as in I wake up at night coughing.  I am the only one in the house coughing.   Mabuti na lang my kids, who are also on Montelukast, are not coughing like me and are all right.

my daughter too has allergic rhinitis. mula nung baby pa lang sya, nakita  na yun ng pedia nya. One indicator nun e, merong "allergic shiner" yung anak ko. lalo na pag may ubo at sipo sya, aakalain no na puyat sya kasi nangingitim yung ibaba ng eyes nya, na medyo makintab. She has used montiget, although hindi naman sya ginawang maintenance. so, kapag first sign pa lang ng pagha-hatsing nya, pinapainom ko na sya ng loraped. yung spray naman nya ay Sniff lang, at pag may ubo na, her doctor would usually give her asmalin-broncho.

The fact that you are having night time disturbance means that you really need to be on steroids. I hope you get better soon para mas mabilis ang pagtaper.

^ After just 3 days of taking steroids, I feel much better.  I do not wake up at night/early morning due to my coughing fits.

I still feel a bara in my nose though kaya twice a day pa rin my Avamys.   Doc Lelet, should I continue with Budecort too?  Paubos na kasi based on the dial of the turbohaler nasa 20 na lang.

If you have allergic rhinitis are you More prone to pneumonia? My 10mo old baby had his 3rd bout of pneumonia early this month  . He started having sneezing fits on a Saturday. Gave him his usual medicines of sterimar, nasonex and virlix. He was ok. Upon waking up on tuesday morning, he started coughing. I thought it was post nasal drip. It worsened throughout the day but nonetheless "milder" compared to his first bout of pneumonia. When we brought him to the hospital the following day, his dr confirmed it was pneumonia again. his pedia was saying our current living setup (we live in a condo) makes him susceptible to allergens and viruses. So now house arrest muna siya.

^ Ally, when we were living at Eastwood, my kids had coughing and sneezing fits every month din.  It's all the dust from the construction eh.  When we moved to our place now, naging rare ang bouts nila.  In fact, we've been to their allergologist 3x or 4x pa lang since 2009.
