wow! this thread really helps:) my 20-month old baby has it, as per her current pedia. And as per the 4 symptoms listed by dra. lelet - watery eyes, itchy nose, colorless nasal discharge, slight cough. whenever she has sipon kasi we bring her for check-up, pedia will say clear ang throat/lungs, so ipprescribe lang ay allerkid, and the sipon would go away after several days. now i notice na lately, every month nagkakaron sya ng allergic rhinitis. Like right now, meron syang sipon, pero whenever she blows her nose, parang tubig lang lumalabas, colorless kung baga. Is it time for me na to consult with a pedia-allergologist? And is it necessary that the child must be suffering from allergic rhinitis pag dinala na sa pedia-allergo? It scares me kasi nabasa ko that AR can also lead to ear infections, tsaka ayoko rin yung madalas umiinom ng anti-allergy I used to have allergies din before, pag sobrang lamig or sobrang init, super namamantal ako. then iinom ako ng anti-hist. Btw, are antihistamines otoxins? I dont know if i got the spelling right, but its like may bad effect sa ears/hearing?I suspect kasi that I loss my hearing due to over-use of anti-hist back in gradeschool dahil grabe ang allergy attacks ko nun, di ako makapasok ng school sa dami ng pantal sa katawan.

No, anti-histamines are not ototoxic. Usual ototoxic meds are antibiotics, such as the aminoglycosides (gentamycin, amikacin, etc) and the chemotherapeutic drugs. Wala ka bang allergic rhinitis? Kasi baka you have ear problems because of untreated or poorly treated allergic rhinitis.
I suggest that you have your daughter checked by a pedia allergologist na para ma-control ang symptoms niya as early as now.

Anong specialist ang humahawak sa allergic rhinitis? My eldest has this, I need to have him checked. Kawawa naman kasi every pagwake-up and bago magsleep...

i can't recall if i ever had allergic rhinitis before though, pero i had mumps when I was 8yo (Grade 2) (which i am thinking as another contributing factor too). nways, i did some backread and you've mentioned "allergy shiners"? yung dark circles under the eyes? Is this similar to eyebags? Do they appear lang when at the onset of allergies, like AR? Lately rin kasi I noticed nga na parang madalas may eyebags si baby, eh di naman sya kulang sa tulog lol! Btw, my mother also suggested taking her to an ENT, kasi as you have mentioned nakaka-cause rin ng ear infections ang recurrent na allergic rhinitis (pero her pedia checked her ears the last time we went for check-up due to her constipation problema naman, wala naman nakita sa ears..but this lwas a week before her present bout with AR). I also noticed that whenever the weather changes abruptly, nagkaka-sipon sya. Could it be that the weather is her allergen? Hay, daming doctor/pedia na ni baby aside from her usual pedia, meron syang pedia-gastro (kasi she used to have reflux before), and a pedia-pulmo (she tested positive kasi sa PPD test, and were on comprilex for several months na).

baby ko 5-week old pa lang meron na ata allergic rhinitis..almost 3 weeks ng lage clogged nose niya sa gabi at madaling araw, pero sa umaga wala na. ang bilis ng mucus production niya..pag na alis namin sa gabi, pag gising niya meron na naman mucus.. naawa din ako kase may tunog coming from her nose pa humuhinga siya.. i use sterimar para ma alis yung mucus at pang 5th day na niya nag take ng virlix 2 drops a day pero parang wala improvement..kailangan maalis yung mucus para maka hinga siya ng ayos, minsan hirap alisin kaya napupuyat talaga kami..hindi ko na alam gagawin ko para mawala allergy niya..

Allergic shiners refer to the dark shiny circles under the eyes na parang eyebags. The nasal congestion brings about poor circulation under the eye area kaya nagkakashiners.
Changes of weather can trigger attacks of allergic rhinitis. It's what we refer to as an environmental trigger. Check mo kung anong season madalas ang symptoms niya so you'd be better prepared next time.

How old is your baby now?
We don't usually diagnose AR at 5 weeks of age kasi madalas talaga magkasipon ang babies less than 6 months of age because of their immature nasal anatomy.

^ 5 weeks and 4 days pa lang baby ko ngayon..this morning sneeze siya ng sneeze. sipon na ba yun? kase pina check up namin siya last week hindi naman daw maga yung nasal passage niya at wala naman siya fever, hindi rin siya nawawalan ng appetite sa pagdede.. mixed feeding po kami..

Sneezing is a symptom of rhinitis, whether allergic or not. Other symptoms are: Nasal itching, congestion or baradong ilong and watery nasal discharge.
Fever is not part of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Kapag may fever, most likely may infection.
At 5 weeks and 4 days, I would not diagnose the patient as having allergic rhinitis already since allergic rhinitis usually doesn't develop that early. For allergic rhinitis to develop, dapat may prolonged and constant exposure to inhalant allergens such as dust mites, mold, etc.
Common ang sneezing, sipon and baradong nose sa patients under 6 months because of their immature nasal anatomy. Most often, it goes away on its' own.
Check also the temp of your aircon. Cold temp can also bring about symptoms of rhinitis.

almost 3 weeks na yung stuffy nose niya..naawa ako pag barado parehas yung nose niya at hindi maalis yung mucus kase nasa loob pa. nakakatakot naman lage linisin ng cotton buds kase parang masyado malaki pa yung buds sa nose niya..1 week na nga kami hindi nag aircon pero ganun pa rin, bilis ng mucus production. safe ba ang muconase sa kanya? were using sterimar kase kaya lang medyo expensive siya, plan ko pagkaubos mag muconase na lang..bakit wala effect ang virlix sa kanya? 1 week lang siya pinapainom ng virlix, pang 6th day na niya ngayon.

If it's been 6 days and Virlix is still not taking effect, then it's possible that it's not allergic rhinitis in the first place kasi dapat by now, may improvement ka ng makita since fast acting ang Virlix.
Muconase NS is safe to use for infants, but I suggest you get your pedia's approval first before switching to Muconase kasi baka may reason siya why she wanted Sterimar for your baby. I suggest that you bring her back to the pedia for a follow up check up.

Pedia lang pinuntahan namin before, now mukhang need na talaga ni eldest ko ng specialist.

Thanks sis. Everyday na kasi umaatake yung allergic rhinitis niya. Tapos nagworry ako kasi pati sa school daw, pinagtatawanan na siya ng classmates kasi achoong daw siya ng achoong sunod-sunod. Kawawa naman.

^ Sounds like your child needs to be seen by an allergologist na since daily na ang attacks niya and his quality of life is already getting affected.

@leletmd- my 3 month old son was diagnosed of atopic dermatitis by 2 pedia and until now his rashes are getting worse. Will a allergologist-immunologist help us if we consult his case?im thinking of this because i was an apas patient..sorry medyo off topic. TIA!

Yes, if it is still getting worse, then it's time to consult an allergologist - immunologist. 
It is best to consult an allergologist - immunologist early on so that his allergic and non - allergic triggers could be identified, proper avoidance measures may be advised and proper management may be undertaken.
If there is continuous exposure to allergens, atopic dermatitis may lead to development of asthma and allergic rhinitis later on.

ask ko lang po kasi si baby is 7wks old (almost same as Jorhen at 5 ot 6wks old), may mga rashes po sya sa face and sa neck, batok.  it could be lactose intolerant or skin asthma daw.  she just started Virlix drops (4drops daw) and change of milk from Nan HW1 to Enfalac Lactose free.  Ang breast milk continue lang (mix po kasi ako bm & formula due to insufficient bm; ~45% lang ang bm ko sa kanya).

ask ko lang po about Virlix:
1) sa box & leaflet nung Virlix, ang meron lang pong dosage na nakalagay ay yung from 2yrs old... does it mean hindi pwedi ang Virlix below 2yrs old??? 
2) paano po ba gamitin yung Virlix drops?  ang hirap kasi, hahayaan lang po ba yung patak from the bottle na bumagsak sa mouth ni baby? parang ang tagal po kasi ng kada drop, eh kung naglilikot na si baby, ang hirap ma-shoot... 

Sensya medyo off topic po dito sa thread, pero, paano po ba ma-distinguish kung ano ang cause ng rashes ni baby: is it due to lactose-intolerant or skin asthma?  kaka found out lang po namin na si hubby pala ay may skin asthma, which is pwedi palang hereditary!

hindi naman po sobrang mapupula ang rashes ni baby... minsan lang, lalo yung sa mga batok, anit.  yung sa face nya makikitang obvious lang kapag naaninag sa sunlight.    hanggang upper chest lang po ang rashes nya... so far, parang meron sa isang tuhod, pero hindi ko sure baka skin bumps lang kasi konting konti lang saka hindi red...
