anong preventive measures ang ginagawa niyo and how do you take care of them when they are sick...ano ba ang usual do's and dont's

I give my son -3 1/2yo a lot of fluids when he's sick
then hindi nawawala yung Vicks vaporub - I just recently found out they have it for babies din
then pag sinisipon / ubo, I use the vaporizer for him to sleep better
I give him half WARM baths instead of sponge bath, effective naman and when he has cold lumalabas yung secretions niya during his warm bath
I give him honey before bedtime it helps kung meron siyang ubo ( not for smaller children )
I take note of the meds I give kung sakasakali kailanganin ko when I got to the doctor and for me na din to keep track of what I gave him
I try to make him mild tea with lemon kung meron siyang ubo or sipon
I also make him chicken noodle soup for scratch or arroz caldo   or anything warm when he's sick
Pag may lagnat round the clock ang medicine to make sure hindi magiging grabe
I choose homeopathic kind din of cough/cold meds for him
I make sure din my son gets more than enough sleep para hindi siya manghina

^ i gave my son lagundi cough syrup just last dec, it was effective.  but it was prescribed by his pedia.  this, along with the vaporizer worked.  btw, last resort yung lagundi.  i never gave him meds before pag cough and colds lang.

i make sure he eats healthy.  i sneak in fruits and veggies in his ice pops (the only way he'll take in juice!) so yung ice pops niya, calamansi juice with honey with some malunggay (or any green veggie) or carrots na pureed.   pag tinitikman ko yung ice pops niya (or ice candy), maasim for me pero since he likes munching on ice, go sya.

he takes quick warm baths when he's got a stuffy nose, this clears up the stuffiness. 

for coughs, the vaporizer works too.  i turn on the aircon in his room, then turn on the vaporizer while he's playing. i make it a point to do this hours before he goes to his nap or before he goes to sleep.  what happens kasi is the vaporizer makes him cough (sometimes until he throws up phlegm) and if this is done just before sleeping he'll have trouble sleeping because of the coughing brought about by the vaporizer.

manipis ang hair ng anak ko, so whenever we go out and it seems mahamog i make him wear his cap.

when he has fever, i still don't give him meds unless the fever reaches about 38degrees.  then i give him tempra.  pag bumaba na hindi na ulit.

thank GOD hindi sya sakitin, i attribute this to him being a breastfed baby till he was about 3 1/2.

Dito sa US meron siya sa Walmart, I think yung Vicks for babies is milder, kasi if you buy the regular one its not for children <2

Do your pedias prescribe antibiotics for cough lasting for more than 5 days?

According to my baby's pedia cough starts out as viral daw and then can become bacterial.  Inaagapan ng antibiotics para hindi maging pneumonia.  Ganito rin ba sa inyo?

^yup. the last time nag ka cough yung son ko, it lasted for more than 5 days and his pedia nga prescribed na an antibiotic

^Thanks!  Medyo takot kasi akong bigyan ng too much medicine ang baby ko.  It's painful to see and hear her cough.  I read kasi some kids get by without cough medicine, but at the same time ayoko rin naman to take the risk na lumala ang sakit nya because I'm wary of giving her some.

Ano ulit ang differences ng vaporizer, humidifier at nebulizer?  Which brand would you recommend?

sis DV, yung baby ko recently nagka ubo.. nag prescribe ng antibiotics kasi may wheezing na sya.. and then was later concluded na may asthma pala sya.. dati nebulize namin sya (with Ventolin).. itong nebulizer meron mask tapos inhale nya yung usok na nanggagaling sa ventolin na gamot.. pero since asthma na pala, may maintenance sya na spray na gamot na nakakabit sa babyhaler..

apart from that, meron kaming humidifier sa room nya.. pero kahit nung newborn pa sya eh meron naman na kami nito..

Thanks for the reply, sis yapeegurl!  Sa ilang pedia ko kasing c-in-onsult (even a pulmo-pedia), walang nag-advise ng humidifier/vaporizer/nebulizer.  Laging antibiotic agad pag may ubo.  Dito ko lang sa GT nabasa and learned from friends and relatives about it.  I recently did a bit of research on the humidifier and vaporizer.  Yung humidifier pala mostly cold air mist at yung vaporizer yung may steam from boiling water.  Yung nebulizer di ko makita, yun pala yung may mask no?  Anyhow, my baby recovered from her cough and cold na.  Hindi ko na itinuloy yung Ambroxol na nireseta ng pedia (she was already on Ventolin drops for the first 5 days of her cough).  I just sprayed her nose with Sterimar.  Thanks for the recommendation!  Sorry about your baby having asthma.

^yes sis.. hirap pag may asthma si baby kasi madali syang mahawa sa ubo at sipon tapos hindi makahinga.. kaya kelangan ng super alalay sa mga gamot..

Ambroxol din yung gamot ni baby nung nagkaubo sya dyan..

sa sterimar pala sis, ginagawa ko, spray ko sya sa takip ng bottle ng sterimar tapos saka ko ilalagay sa nostrils.. kasi nagugulat baby ko sa spray.. dati type nya yun eh.. ngayon lumaki laki na sya, ayaw na..

ganito din yung sa daughter ko. when her cough and colds progressed to almost a week, she was placed in antibiotic.

for cough, i give chestal cough syrup and allergy relief for the colds. both are homeopathic meds from healthy options. but i noticed this is only effective at the onset. kapag medyo matagal na yung cough and colds and i only give these then, it doesnt work anymore.

^^Sis yapeegurl, sa baby ko naman nung first week nya on Sterimar, wrestling kami talaga.  After then there was little struggle na.  Nasanay na siguro at na-realize nyang kahit anong gawin nya ilalagay ko pa rin so she let me spray her nose na rin.

^Sis hunny_ally, do you consult with the pedia pa if you want to give homeopathic medicines to your baby?  If so, what does she say?  Nung tinanong ko kasi pedia about lagundi syrups hindi yun ang pr-in-escribe nya kahit I was leaning towards it.  Ventolin ang inireseta.

DV, if I may answer, a traditional MD probably won't be familiar with homeopathics because it takes more training to gain expertise in it. Most MD's would prescribe pharmaceuticals. Fortunately, there are some MD's who are starting to go the naturopathic route (like Dr. Cricket Chen) and pursue continuing education in that field.

speaking of Dr. Cricket Chen, she encouraged my boy to take Seven Seas and Cod Liver Oil.. i forgot to ask the pedia if we should continue to give my son vitamins during his medication period.. Montelukast lang naman kasi ang medicine na tina-take talaga..

^hunny_ally, Ventolin din sis prescribe ng pedia ng baby ko dati nung naconfine sya 4months ago before they concluded it was asthma.. pampaluwag ito ng airways ng lungs nya.. there's another drops na iaalternate namin with ventolin that time pero nakalimutan ko na ang pangalan..

I see.  We're actually in between pedias now and looking for someone like Dr Chen at St Luke's.  Does Dr Chen practice pure naturopathic medicine?

Yes, Ventolin is for asthma na pwede rin for cough (bronchodilator).  My baby had dry cough kasi and the pedia said Ventolin would help the bronchial tubes expand or something like that.

^sis yung Seven Seas sa Healthy Options ako nakabili.. yung cod liver oil dito na sa amin (SG) ako nakabili pero hindi ko nacheck sa healthy options.. i think meron sila dun..
