How much is your first salary in your first job? And how did you spend it?

My parents always encouraged us to be enterprising; when I was a kid we'd sell ice candy during the summer and T-shirts for fundraisers, things like that.

My first "real job"--like, with an actual company--was as staff for a chocolate shop back in high school. Some family friends owned the place so they gave me a chance to help out at the Alabang branch. I handed out flyers, bussed tables, scooped ice cream, that sort of thing. Best summer vacation ever. *nostalgia*

I remember my first salary came in a little brown envelope with the coins jingling inside and the amount penciled on the front; I think it was like a few hundred lang and some change hahaha It wasn't always fun to get up super early to open up the store but when I got my little packet at the end of the week, oh.. ^_^ It was awesome. I was awkward and insecure and thirteen and for once, in that glorious moment, I felt so responsible and independent and grown up.

I don't remember what I spent it on, I think I put it in my piggy bank and took it out the next day. But I have never forgotten how it felt. I know McDonalds has a kiddie internship type program like that; I wish more businesses would do the same.

When my son is old enough I want him to have summers like that, so he can understand the value and dignity in an honest day's work, no matter how lowly or boring it may seem. I want him to see what it means to be on time, to be nice to everyone even when they are not nice back, to never be afraid to roll up his sleeves and pick up someone else's trash just because it makes his corner of the world a little better.

Does being in a Jollibee kiddie crew count? Because that was my first real job... one where I had to apply, be interviewed, be trained then get to work for real... I don't remember the rate at all, but since it's the first job (that is not linked to our family business) so it matters a lot to me. I had real bosses and colleagues, too. Since I was around 9, what can you expect? First pay = Burger & Choco Fudge Sundae... And if I remembered correctly, I got to enjoy an employee discount, even so, kulang my first pay to cover for the purchase, so I had to shell out from my own pocket. Those were the days!!!

That's such a nice story, eightyeight. My mom would take me along to work in our family business since I was old enough to do math and package goods. I would spend about 2-3 days of each week each summer waking up at an ungodly hour. But I never got paid for any of it, not a single centavo. Sure, my parents bought me what I want, but I think it would've been nice to have been paid so that I would've valued my work. I think they missed an opportunity there big time. When I finally graduated, I refused to take on the family business. Haha. I hope I can teach the value of work and earning your own money to my own children.
