Used to ask for medium rare specially when I entertaining foreign colleagues.  There are some foreigners kasi who can be sooooooo condescending specially when they are in a "third world" country and they will comment on every frigging thing.  Eh siempre colleague or clients hindi mo naman puedeng ombagin lagi, eh sobra ako kung mambara, so as compromise I order medium well para wala nang debate (my bosses complained I'm too vocal). 

THEN, the madcow, salmonella and other food "bacteria" came to fore.  And take note mostly first world countries were hit.  I can now happily ask for order medium well (which I personally think brings out the best flavor of the beef with out making it too tough and dry).  When a foreigner (like my bro-in law) comments on it, I just say "BACTERIA, this is why you have sensitive stomachs!"
