@ leletmd - Thanks for the heads up. I had to verify the information. The initial info I got about the owner, Pat, was that he had a stroke and that his Filipina wife now mans the operation of the place. I guess I and my companions mistakenly presumed that the owner had died of the stroke, hence the deterioration of the food's quality. Pasensiya na rin po.

Now, your news that Pat is truly alive and well is both good and bad news. I apologize especially to the chef for assuming na 'namayapa' na siya. I'm not sure if his stroke has left him debilitated, or if he's still able to do much cooking. What I'd like to know now is, did he really suffer a stroke or not.

I'm saying that it's bad news in the sense that he has let his establishment's food quality deteriorate. It's simply not as good as before. This is coming from an old customer's point of view. The new customers may still rave about it, but they couldn't tell the difference between then and now. Even the curry has evolved into something that is more Pinoy than Thai, taste-wise. That's deplorable for people who appreciate and look for genuine Thai food.

And I say that your news is also good news because, seeing that your family knows the owner personally, maybe you can forward this concern to him so that he can somehow bring back the old glory of Soms food when they had been starting out, when they had very few but good items on the menu. I'd be genuinely happy to see that.

Agree din ako sa 'yo about parking space.  ;)

Pa-add lang po: I don't have anything against Soms. I'm just disappointed with most of the supposedly Thai restos sa Metro Manila. I'd be ecstatic if one or two restos really hit the nail on the head and consistently come up with dishes identical to what one can find in Thailand. ;D Peace!

@summersong: From what my parents told me, Pat did have a stroke and his Filipino wife is now managing the Makati place, but Pat is alive and not at all debilitated. My dad just saw him 2 weeks ago, attending to customers of Soms. Perhaps their problem is, Soms is now more commercialized than before... I wouldn't really know.
I would like to add also that neither I nor my family has any business connections with Soms. I am merely a concerned neighbor, who thought it would be better to correct the wrong notion that the Thai owner has passed away when he is very much alive. Kawawa naman kasi si Pat if a member of his family reads your previous post. Baka may maniwala kasi...
Anyway, that's that. At least, naclarify na that the owner is alive. That is the best news ever.  ;)

Muang Thai

- since Im not expecting so much from this place, I was surprised that the ambiance is good. The kind of ambiance I was looking for in a Thai resto (I have only been to Soms and Jatujak btw). Far more interesting ang details dito compared to the 2.

- taste. their crispy catfish salad is more salty, lacks mango and peanuts as compared to Jatujak's version. ang generous serving ay yung cripsy catfish itself. naoverpower nya yung mango and peanuts. Muang Thai fried rice, ang sarap! Red Curry Chicken serving is generous and very flavorful, as always. Tom Yum is good, saktong spicy. Pad Thai, the usual taste. Pasado!

tax and service charge included.

will share my blog entry pag di na ko tinatamad magblog. :D

^ It's great you enjoyed it, sis. That resto's been around a long time. I first discovered it sa Banawe during the mid-90s. Naging consistent naman ang lasa ng food nila over the years. Their specialty rice is my favorite there although tasty rin yung ibang rice sa menu. Complete dish na siya by itself andami kasing sahog.  :)

^ Yes.  I forgot to request kasi na mild lang.  Anyway, next time naman kumain kami ulit sa MBK, ni-request ko.  Masarap nga siya.  The papaya is cool to the palate, parang pam-balance siya if you are ordering curry.

Baka meron sa Benjarong or People's Palace. ;)
