IAMSMART -- yes she has 3.  1 sleeps in her room, 1 in her daughter's room, and 1 in her younger son's room.  (The bedrooms are on the 3rd floor of her townhouse.  From the living and dining room and her kitchen on the 2/F -- hindi amoy aso her house.  Wala ding dog hair on her sofas and chairs.

The dogs are combed by the maid everyday; toothbrush din.
Alam ko her husband enjoys giving them baths on Saturday mornings. How often she brings them to the pet shop for grooming -- 1x a month?  -- hindi ko alam.  Basta I know she brings them to that pet shop on Ortigas, North Greenhills section.

IF you see a woman with 3 Shih Tzus that are not leashed walking around at Bonifacio High Street -- that is most likely her.  Her dogs are soo cute and behave so well (they follow her or her kids wherever they go, without any leash)  -- 1 nga alam ko gets paid P5thou per tv appearance (for movies hindi ko alam how much).

But 1 dog!  Naku I told her paluin ko yan -- my sister did not talk to me for a week.  Kasi ba naman -- he made arte so I will pick him up to sit on my lap. Tapos, eh gusto lang pala ngatngatin my bag!

If you have any questions about the care and management of a Shihtzu -- I can ask her for you.   :)

KAIZ --   The 6:30AM "on board" time of your helper and yaya may be just okay for your lifestyle now if that gives you enough time to do your toilette, have a good breakfast, and gives you time to discuss  with your yaya and helper the tasks/reminders for the day.  Yung hindi ka parang express train in the morning.

"On board" for me means -- my helper eh nakaligo na at naka breakfast na -- so ready na to be of service.  I do not let even my cleaners go on board na hindi nakaligo.

Maybe your office mates need earlier on-board times for their helpers coz of their kids/household member  who must leave the house/for school before 7AM.

My household staff must all be on board by 6AM.
The cook goes on board earlier -- 5:15 coz by 5:30 the other help like to eat their breakfast na.

IAMSMART -- yes, when you start on a house organization program -- start with something within your control, that nobody will object to or sabotage.  Or yung pinapakialaman ka while you are doing it   :)

The easiest place to put in order is your vanity table, if you use one.
Or, your "vanity" shelf/drawer or area by the bathroom sink/whatever.  De-clutter and organize your stuff according to use.  Meaning, what you use daily -- place where easily accessible.  Time-and-motion study baga.  The less time and motion, the better.
Yung bihira gamitin -- you can put out of sight.
BUT really give away/throw what you do not use every week.

Then start with your closet, 1 closet/day.
Kung complicated -- 1 cabinet/shelf per day. Basta keep on going everyday.

Be sure that your organization/arrangement conforms to your habits/convenience.  If you do it the other way around -- in a short time, gulo nanaman kasi however it was organized does not make your life easier.   That is the logic behind any organizing effort -- the outcome should make your life easier.

For example:  if I am the type who puts her make-up on with just my bath towel on me -- then it is convenient for me to store my underwear near my clothes or sa dressing room/area.  But if I like to put on my make-up in my underwear -- then I may store my underwear somewhere near my vanity table or near the shower stall.

The next simple thing to organize is your kids' room/s and play/activity areas.  With kids -- focus on what activities they do/you want them to do in which area/room.  Provide for everything required for the activity and really exclude what does not serve the purpose.
(Ex. if they do homework or artwork on your dining table -- then stock the drawers of your buffet table or some accessible cabinet with pencils, crayons, paper, whatever supplies they use.  Do not store toys where they study.)

Then you can do your kitchen.  Assess what your cook/you need to use everyday.  Buy whatever is lacking.  Put away the kitchenware you do not use everyday.  Give away what you hardly use/duplicates.
For party stuff -- I keep these on open racks in my bodega.  That way, your kitchen is not cluttered; and you minimize loss/pilferage.
Impt sa kitchen -- whatever is used should be easily accessible.
My cook is short, so with most of my househelp.  So I do not have standard height hung wall cabinets in the Service Kitchen.  I have a lot of pull-out drawers in the under-counter cabinets.

After your cooking area and the cabinets under and around it and the sink/s -- organize your ref and freezer/s.  Then your pantry/wherever you store your groceries.

I organize my husband's closets, work area, and whatever area he spends a lot of time in (portion of the lanai, game room)  or where he stores his stuff last.
Kasi dyan, consultation is required.
Do not go against his habits.  Maiinis yan if he cannot readily locate something he needs.  Even if you think his habit is weird -- organize according to that.  It will not do your relationship any good to try to convert him just because you want a nice-looking arrangement of his stuff, or you want an Architectural Digest-looking room.

I am not saying you cannot organize your husband into better habits -- that is altogether another organization program.  When you are done with your basic organization for your house -- you can start with your husband.  Kelangan dyan hindi obvious you are transforming him.  He must think whatever idea it is came from him.  Daw.  Therein lies a challenge, which I believe -- a lot of us women capably handle   ;)

Just keep on going everyday with something, even just 1 drawer on the days you are tired.
Focus on how you will make that area serve the activity you do there, in a way that will make your life easier.
Be ruthless about discarding things that have no function.
Sa buhay ngayon, kelangan hindi lang maganda/decorative -- kelangan may pakinabang/function din.  It is the same thing with people, it is not enough that a person is physically beautiful --kelangan may added value hindi ba?   ;D but true.

IAMSMART -- ooh you have the ideal set-up!
                   Nakakainggit ka, no maids!
You and hubby have total privacy.
And pag walang aasahan -- 2 kayo gagawa whatever
needs to be done at home, your husband is considerate kasi alam nya pag hindi sya maayos or tutulong ikaw ang kawawa, etc etc etc

                   Enjoy!   :)

Sis, madali kang makaka organize, kelangan lang ng 1 small step and an  initial "buelo".....  makalat din kasi ang mga katulong until you break them in eh.    :)

Yes, keep us posted. Kayang kaya mo yan.   Good luck!

sis aqua, im just wondering about your daily ritual that has something to with music...does it have something to do with feng shui or something? na-curious ako bigla kasi here at home, when i get up sa madaling-araw(to go to work and prepare the household for the day), i turn on the radio for the morning news(para na rin ma-check kung may pasok ba or for any incidents for the day that i should know about like rallies, traffic, etc). will it be better if i just play a classical music CD instead? maybe its just me, but i noticed too that when i hear something bad in the morning news, for some reason, parang mabigat din ang araw ko. or masyado lang akong mapamahiin?

your idea makes sense, i'll give it a try.

Sis ANETSKI, ganyan din ako dati -- on the news once I got up.
But I realized, how much ba of the news was useful to me at that time?  Was it contributing to my well-being?
Kadalasan, mga reports of hold-ups, saksakan, traffic updates (naku we all know what traffic is like naman), govt scandals, etc..  Add the  sound effects and "voice" tone/decibel of the news person -- it all jacks up your tension level.  Parang tinutulak ka to panic di ba?

Eh hindi ba, what you do in the morning sets the tone of the rest of your day?  Eh pano ka magkaka "It's a beautiful day!" if hinahalungkat your normal apprehension level.  Kelangan positive start di ba?

But when you have doubts about the weather and class suspensions/rallies -- definitely,  turn the radio on.  But that will not be everyday, not even 1x/week.  :)

So it is not feng shiu -- just doing something inexpensive and easy so that your family and household start the day on a positive note.
Well, playing a CD is cheaper and safer than aromatherapy candles all over the house, IMO.   Save the candle for your private recreation with hubby  :)

Try Bocelli, Vivaldi, even Josh Groban.   (Vivaldi is better than Debussy or Mozart for mornings.  Easier on the ears, parang no-brainer classical  music.  Hindi  ma-angst.  If this comment offends the high-brow music lovers - Peace!)

Try it and please give us feedback.

God bless.

BEDAZZLED BEAUTY -- teka ha, Sis,  :)  the objective is not to be OC but to have an organized life so that the LEAST  effort is spent on repetitive no-brainer tasks.  That way, you will have time for things that bring you more joy (like flirting, or "playing footsies" or more than footsies ...    :D ;))

Stop with the bed, you are very correct there.
Move into your studio 1st with just that bed.
And maybe a temporary rack to hang your clothes on, and
a couple of collapsible tables for you to put your folded clothes, etc on; and to work on.   Borrow from your mom muna.  Everybody has a party/collapsible/monoblock table.  Kung wala mom mo -- I will lend you mine.   :)

Thereafter,  just window shop.
Go to the furniture/decor stores -- busisiin mo whatever catches your eye.  But at the same time, assess how it matches your needs.
Bring a notebook around, and ask the SA for the dimensions.  Try to get the SA to give you a pic of the items you like (from their brochure or a xerox from their product catalogue -- kung papayag.  Say you must consult your mom, partner, husband -- whoever you want to say shares your condo -- 1st, so pakita mo muna.  Kuno.)
Or, what the heck, take a pic with your cellphone.
That way, you can think about the item again.  You will avoid impulse-buying.

After 2-3 weeks in your studio (this is your 1st time to live on your own?) -- you will be able to establish what your needs/priorities are.  Malalaman mo na ano ang galaw mo, ang kelangan mo.
Listen to yourself, hwag ka gagaya sa mga magazines.  These are good only for sourcing ideas from.
What you should focus on is your personal needs and habits.
What is gonna make your life easier?

1 more thing -- you do not need to provide for everything that is in your mom's house.  You can even do away with a full-function kitchen.  Just a microwave/a single-burner induction cooker and a ref will do.  Actually, you can do away with a living area.  However you want to live -- pander to that.  You do not have to please anyone, lalo na if you are single! Wow -- no consultations needed, enjoy this phase in your life.  Spoil yourself, Sis.

After 2-3 weeks, you would have nailed down how it is to move around in your studio.  Saka ka lang buy ng furniture mo.  Do not buy all at once, prioritize mo.

Be mindful of your dimensions ha -- measure 2x at least the area and the furniture/appliance you intend to buy.
Do not think that because you saw those pieces of furniture in the model unit eh you will just copy the lay-out.
Alam mo ang mga model units may konting daya -- as in the ceilings are usually 1-2ft higher, same with the walls -- pushed back a half-meter or more.    AND the furniture are not standard -- meaning, custom built yan so that LOL -- the unit will look like it is completely furnished but maaliwas/spacious pa.  So mind your measurements.

If it is a studio -- the less on display, the more restful it is.
Yang mga glass-front cabinets, mga open shelves -- unless you are always straightening things -- will just give you a headache.

Try looking at movable clothes armoires -- that gives you the chance to re-configurate your studio once you get tired of your lay-out.
Get a clothes armoire that does not look like it is just for clothes -- yung may potential mag mukhang "doble cara" kahit na "triple cara" -- LOL so you can move it and use it to store something else if you want a  change later on/if you move to another place.

IF you are so lucky your mom/granny has an antique clothes armoire -- beg, steal or borrow -- whatever, as long as you get to use it.  These things are so expensive now and go with any decor style -- zen, modern, euro, Asian, minimalist, etc. etc.

A glass table-top (a small rectangle) is the most efficient, specially if the "legs" are likewise movable.  (For ideas on this,  go to an Ikea website/on line catalogue.)   It can be used for dining, office work, food prep ...
If you are not entertaining -- push it against a wall.
Again, if you can beg, steal or borrow a small table (mga ginagamit nila noon sa foyer, or in the bedrooms)  -- even an old console table (these are table-height and though narrow, can be used to dine on -- lalo na,  work on!  :) -- grab it.

Flat-screen tv, regardless of the size.  Believe me,  when you are living alone there are times you will need a tv for ambient noise.  Flat is best.

For clothes you use occasionally (travel, formal occasions, seasonal clothes) -- store in your mom's house muna.  After a year, what you did not retrieve from your mom's house -- eh ibig sabihin you can live without these, discard.  :)

Take your time.  Always buy what is unique or rare.  It does not mean you will spend an arm-and-a-leg for these.  Just open your eyes to the possibilities of a furniture piece.  And take your time parang you do not end up with furniture/items that will not work for you.

Of course, simultaneously look for a practical (meaning, what will work for you per your eating and stocking habits) ref and cooking unit.
Function + beauty ang mantra natin dapat for our homes di ba.

If you stick to "service for 4" -- you can keep your flatware and cooking implements in a drawer -- mas maaliwalas.
Sis, if you can avoid it -- do not hang your cooking implements naka display.  How many times ba naman do your cook, anyway.  IMO, mas okay stash in a drawer in a removable rectangle bin -- and bring out when you cook.  Ilan ba naman, honestly, do you use?
Better to hang a print/painting kesa mga sandok on the wall di ba?  Better a vase of flowers on the counter than mga sandok, sandok di ba?   :)

Invest in a nice full length mirror.  If you can install it in your banyo or in your hallway -- better, double purpose.  Pag labas mo you can check if you are in complete beautiful glory.

Nga pala, Sis, who will baby-sit your dog while you are out working?

^ thank you sis super helpful ang tips mo, i just might have to print it out and make some notes LOL.. napaisip tuloy ako.. wala akong mahihiram sa bahay kasi mga tita ko lang andun, mom ko and the rest of the family are here in UK, i'll be home on march pa after my 4 month stay here.. so kelangan pala talaga 2-3 weeks before buying furnitures to avoid impulse buying (which i'm guilty of).. sabi ng mom ko new na lang daw bilin ko kasi matagal tagal ko din gagamitin..

iiwan ko lang ang dog for a couple of hours since i'll get a sched which i could get around with (madaming breaks), i'm on a medical course kasi.. and kuha ako ng place na malapit sa school kaya he's never left alone for too long..

i've made a list based on your tips na din.. hehe.. so i have a bed and aircon, electric fan and a tv pala i forgot hahaha..

so ang need ko bilhin is a cabinet, electric stove, dinnerware, coffee table (as dining), full length mirror, ref, ironing board..ano pa ba? hahaha yes, it's my first time to live alone.. too crowded na for me to stay in the extended family's house eh..

my space would probably not be big kaya i need to be as concise and as orderly as possible to make it look good.. i love the idea of kitchenware in drawers.. mas ok ba ang electric vs. gas? i love to cook kasi it's one of my hobbies kaya baka mga once a day i'll probably cook..

thank you for the long reply sis, super helpful ka talaga :)

SILVERONFIRE  thank you too, for giving me the opportunity to be of help.  By nature kasi, I am not a madamot person.  Eh pano ko ba nalaman lahat ito?  I was born messy, definitely hindi naman ako genius -- madami ako natutunan kasi other people shared their knowledge and experiences with me.   (Some people kasi, pag nag advise ka eh nagagalit or they think you are putting them down.)

Yes, before the kids arrive, it is good to establish the tone of your lifestyle.  Remember ha -- you must spend only minimum time on house and house management.  The bulk of your time should be spent on what brings you more joy -- time spent with husband, kids, career -- even reading a book lang.   All these organizing activities' objective is to give us more time for what is important to us, and also -- so that our family enjoys the lifestyle we choose for ourselves.

Rules are just rules -- you can adjust these now and then -- to better fit your lifestyle.  No one's rules are better than anybody's remember that -- but we can consider what others do as a guide to what we do.

Tama ka -- "nice and neat" when he is around.  But remember too, kelangan everything looks effortless (do not make dada, do not do your chores) when he is around.  Also, if you are organized --  you can perpetuate the illusion that men are suckers for -- that he is the center of your universe.  LOL, but true.

Somewhere along the way, because he is convinced (though he may not admit verbally) that you are managing your home well -- madali na lang when it is his turn to be organized.  He will "drop" easily -- kasi he is already "sold" onto the lifestyle you are perpetuating.

I wish you all the best with your new life.
God bless.

I agree with the music. It's so relaxing to hear classical music and not so classical compositions of some really good Japanese pianists.

Try Final Fantasy compositions. Youtube has some. :)

BEDAZZLED -- you are so right about living on your own. Medical studies are hard -- you will need to concentrate, with no distractions.

The less you have lying around -- the better for you.
So take time in buying your armoire/storage units.
If it is a studio unit -- the less you have on the floor is  also good -- meaning,  have 1 big unit instead of several small units/pieces around.  Specially with the dog --  the less underfoot the easier it will be to keep your unit clean.

If I got it right -- you will eventually return to the UK.  In which case, do not buy anything expensive.  Just buy what will meet your minimum specs -- meaning, your stay here for what 4 years only?
Hay naku, in the US we used to buy IKEA (it is available, but not readily though, here in the Phils.) -- coz it would "die" after 4 years.  Wala nang problema how to dispose of these.  LOL

If you love to cook and bake -- but you are not going to be here for long -- La Germania will do fine.  Personally, I love Smeg (I can afford to buy the more expensive brands, but what the heck -- I do not even cook everyday).  In my Service Kitchen, the maids use a La Germania range with an oven.  Buhay pa!  4 yo na.  :)  And the after-sales service is prompt.  But check the burners' distance from each other.  There are 4- burner models na allow you to use only 2 at a time.  Just get what you need.   :)

Check 1st -- there are condo bldgs bawal ang lpg.  I would recommend the new fangled induction cooker.  They look good and do not cost that much.  My friend got a 2-burner AIroma brand for P5thou and it came pa with a 15-pc cookware set.  She says it is safe even for kids to operate, and cooks fast.  I do not have one yet, but intend to buy coz well, it will look nice for my informal parties. But then, kelangan ko ba talaga?  Hindi, so there -- you just helped me decide not to go look for one.  ;D

A stand fan is best for your studio ha.  Do not get a floor variety.
I will tell you something else.
I have a Nikon P500 fan I bought at that office store in Rockwell near the escalators.  When I am at home, in our computer room, and do not need to use the aircon -- I switch on that small fan (5 or 6" diameter lang eh) that is beside my laptop -- and naka focus on my face.  Matipid sa koryente, does not occupy much space, and serves the purpose of cooling me for hours.  Teka, it has been with me for over a year and hindi pa nag die.
(A sister uses that for her Shih Tzu too. Do not ask me why kasi tumaas ang kilay ko when I saw her dog had his own elec. fan, radio and clock.  I asked her --  what time alarm nya?  She ignored me.  LOL)

very appreciated your advices sis aquacharly... that's what i'm trying to do kasi, make our home look nice and neat and relaxing -- but must look effortless on my part hehe... we lost our maid for 2 weeks na kasi, so we are still looking for one (which i hope comes soon kasi dami ko din gusto i-organize talaga sa house namin).. so right now, since hubby and i both work during the day, mega effort talaga ako to clean up before i leave (while hubby is still asleep), and then when i wake him up, cuddle lang kame, embrace embrace hehe... and then kapag ang schedule namin is ako mauna umuwi, definitely, dami ko na magagawa before he gets home, i could clean up the place na, make dinner (sometimes i don't, because he usually calls me up and asks me what i want for dinner, he'd pick something up on the way para hindi na din daw ako mapagod mashado), and do my aero exercises  :D
at least when hubby arrives, dinner na lang and then shower and then bonding time na, watch dvds na or whatever we'd like to do...
