^It also applies to Fokkien.  :)

For me, and this is just my view ha, I would want my children to study Chinese especially if they have Chinese blood, purely because of their heritage/culture.  I mean beyond learning the language, since sabi nga ng iba hindi practical and all that, importante for me yung maappreciate din nila kung saan sila nanggaling.  Kasi sa school naman di lang naman yung language yung pinagaaralan, may iba pa namang subjects.  Kasi may mga pure Chinese din that don't let their kids study in Chinese school anymore.  Their reason is di na daw importante or practical.  Based on my observation, these are the Chinese na matatawag nating modernized or westernized na so not interested in their Chinese heritage na rin.  Sad fact but I guess it's just the sign of the times.

The Chinese language in itself is not the easiest to learn, especially Mandarin lalo na if writing it pa.  Mostly you'd need memorization kaya talagang kelangan ng patience and undestanding for it.  And agree din in some ways with one of the post that says you will also need to practice it outside of school or else mawawala din yun.  Kasi nga naman hindi Chinese/Mandarin ang main language natin in our everyday life, so mahihirapan lang ang mga bata.
napaisip ako dito, and oo nga naman it applies to hokkien also. being able to speak in chinese is one of the things I'm really thankful for specially now that I'm based abroad. nagkalat ang mga hokkien dito specially with the cab drivers.

re: learning chinese, this is also one of the reasons why those who are really eager to learn mandarin go to china for 1-2 years just to study. i have some batchmates from HS who went to beijing to study. but then, i think it depends on the individual also if he/she really wants to learn and speak the language itself. this is one of the things hubby and i regret -- not taking our chinese seriously back in school. our mandarin won't be as rusty as it is now.

^I agree.  If you're Chinese kasi, there's tendency to take our own language for granted.  At least that's what I've observed especially during the time I was still studying.  Sometimes as a teenager, parang we find it corny pa nga, me included.  Kaya eto relearning my Mandarin while tutoring my daughter now.

ah that's why :) you really know how to speak in fookien and mandarin..

I wish I'm that fluent in Mandarin!  :D   I'm very rusty na rin kaya din I posted what I've posted based from experience and observations.  Sobrang sayang kasi, imagine coming from a school that trained us to be able to read Chinese novels and newspapers, tapos now relearning the basics ulit.

sarahsensible Di bale, sabayan na lang ulit natin mga anak natin.  :)

same here, re-learning my mandarin while tutoring my son.  Sometimes I have to refer to Chinese dictionary to be able to read the words properly. Sobrang hinayang ako that I did not took chinese class seriously.  But then again, at Grace memorization lang ang katapat to pass.  It really depends on the student/person if really want to learn.  It's also good to watch Chinese films, pag paulit ulit na, magegets mo rin and mahahasa mandarin.

^^but then napaisip rin ako dito sa taking chinese classes for granted dati, i was placed in our school's special class kasi before and to be honest, i learned much more in our special class compared to our regular classes. and now i remember my chinese teacher kasi cya na rin mismo nagsasabi na hindi effective ang curriculum itself in teaching the students mandarin. i was supposed to enroll with him before i left the country para lang sa mandarin but due to time restraints hindi ako natuloy :( that teacher I'm talking about is now working at berlitz ata ba yun. in fairness to him, kung hindi dahil sa kanya as in major bokya talaga ako ngayon in mandarin :P

^dahil sa chinese movies natuto magmandarin gua kong ko :)

One thing that I'd noticed is that nowadays many Chinese schools only have Chinese as 1 subject as oppose to before where half of the school days compose of multiple Chinese subjects like math, history, language, essay writings and such.

^Depends sa school yata.  Some schools ganun pa rin naman.

^^Yes, Chinese movies and music really help.

Minsan nga when I see foreigners, as in Caucasians, being interviewed in Chinese channels and speaking fluent Mandarin...sobrang nakahiya.  Kaya talagang I want to relearn everything.  Parang sabay na lang while tutoring my daughter.

^I agree!  Yung iba naman kasing parents pinapadala lang din yung mga kids sa China or Taiwan just to join the program or para makiuso lang.

hubby is from Xavier, wala akong masabi sa English niya ang galing galing niya talaga he is fortunate that he grew up with his grandparents kaya magaling din siya mag Chinese. His Xavier friends are not mostly mga Englisero lang pero wala sa chinese.

I'm considering MGC New Life Academy in Fort instead of Xavier, equally sosyalin pa rin naman & coed sila.

^^if habol mo chinese i think your son won't get it in xavier BUT if I'm not mistaken they send their students to china for exposure trips but i think sa high school lang yata to. they only have 1 subject of chinese by the way.

^sorry pero what do you mean by sosyalin?i don't think this should be a basis in looking for a school. in fairness to MGC, they screen their applicants thoroughly. a family friend's complaining about their entrance exam kasi bumagsak son twice na. i guess they really want to maintain their standards.

^ well actually let's face it, some parents do want the prestige.

noong time ko, 2 ang chinese subject namin: Chinese Composition and Chinese Language. pero if i remember correctly one chinese subject a day for 1 hour until the shortened the classes to 50 minutes.

hi, mommies. my son's school teaches mandarin even though it's not really a chinese school. he's prep right now and i'm planning to move him to a different school for grade 1. the new school doesn't have mandarin but i'd like my son to continue studying mandarin sana kasi he really enjoys it. would any of you know where i can enroll him for mandarin lessons? i'm thinking he could go after school kahit 3 times a week lang. dito kami sa may panay ave. (near abs-cbn) nakatira so somewhere near here lang sana.

Well I don't really find the curriculum of Chinese effective dahil puro memorize na lang.  Merong school sa QC Light Christian Academy ang name 1 subject na lang ang chinese and 1 math sa chinese.  Kapag nahuhuli ang anak mo sa english pwede mo ipa stop ang chinese.

Transferred my daughter from Miriam to QCCA (quezon city christian academy). Aside from the fact mas mura ang tuition fee. It's time for my daughter to embrace her roots. I can't give any feedback yet but what I like about QCCA is unlike Miriam which is super big and has a lot of students. QCCA has a very small student population. They are around 30-35 students in one class and only one section per grade level.
