This song was written by John Newton (1725-1807).  Read on sa wiki on how he got to compose the song as he used to be a seafarer (selling slaves) - through his experience of becoming a sinner and he begged for his life at one point begged for mercy and asked for forgiveness.

Truly God is amazing.
