^ it depends on what you would think is ok, what interests you the most and challenges you at the same time :)

What does 'ok' mean for you? :)

sisses, i need some advice that i can advise to my friend (nanghihingi siya sakin ng advice at hindi ko alam kung paano ko siya tutulungan o sasagutin). anyway, here's the case. she just turned 30, art stud grad and works as a writer. bata pa raw siya mahilig na siya sa numbers and meron tlaga siyang heart for finances. yun ang interest niya but she failed to take acctg in college, hindi niya sinabi kung anong reason. nung una happy naman daw siya, pero lately namimiss niya na raw yung numbers. at parang gusto niyang maging CPA.

question, sisses. at her age, advisable ba na mag-take siya ng 2nd course which is acctg since it appears na yun ang passion niya pero di niya lang sinunod noon. eh kung magte-take siya 4 or 5 years, eh di 34/35 na siya, plus boards pa. makakahanap pa ba siya ng competitive job, siya competing with some fresh grads? or ano ba ang alternative na pwede? sinuggest ko nga mag-masters na lang in finance para shorter, mga 2 years lang, kaya lang di naman siya makakapag-boards nun diba? gusto ko siyang iinspire at tulungan kasi true enough ngayon ko lang siya nakitang ganito, yung tipong namimilog pa yung mata sa excitement. she is single, btw, but with a kid. gusto kong sabihin sa kanya na di dapat maging hadlang yung age sa kung anong gusto niyang gawin, but i don't know exactly what to say.

hope to read your advice, sisses. mas okay rin sana kung may specifics like school, course ganyan. sakin niya lang kasi kinuwento at nalulungkot naman ako ng wala akong maitulong. sabi ko may tatanungin ako. kayo pala yun. haha. tia!

If she has the will for it, she can succeed no matter what.

But I suggest she talk to people who are in finance or who are in careers na usually napupuntahan ng accounting graduate.

Iba-iba kasi din yun. May mga nagiging business process consultants/ auditors, financial auditors, finance analysts, bookkeepers, IT auditors, data analysts, at kung ano-ano pa. Madami dun hindi na ganun ka-numbers-focused.

If she talks to people who are in those careers, ask them how their day goes, what they do, what the challenges are, preferably in detail.

The only setback I see with a 35 yo competing with 21 yo new-grad is that most employers accept freshgrads because they want people they can mold and teach. A 35yo might come across as mahirap nang turuan. But again, if she really wants it, nothing can stop her.

Another option is to find a job na finance-related and apply na agad. Para she can have a taste of what it's like.

Syempre its a differenct case if she wants to work for the top auditing firms, they require CPAs talaga.

We're the same age sis. Me anak ako 2 boys. I was currently a 3rd year student ng BSA. Eto mga naexperience ko.
Mahirap na kurso ang BSA, you really need to study after class and hindi talaga pwedeng magpabaya kahit minsan kasi may maintaining grade. So pag me sakit ang baby ko, at kelangan ko mag-aral o pumasok, I have to be emotionally ready to focus.

Ako, kung makakagraduate at the age of 32, staff lang malamang. You need to gather experiences bago ka umangat ng position. Kaya plan ko magtake ng law or masteral to make up for lost time.

Pero sis, super exciting ang pag-aaral ng accountancy, it is worth the pain. Kung talagang ito ang passion nya. Go!  Tell her don't waste any more time wondering "what if?" :)

^ I'm excited for you.  Personally, I think good idea ang mag-work sa maliit na company, maiikutan mo lahat ng pwedeng maikutan at makakabisado moyung buong picture that will make you more capable handling an executive position later on.

Thanks sis.. :)

Mahirap talaga maghabol ng time. Pag passionate ka sa isang bagay, you'll never give up kahit minsan di na clear what will happen next. Bahala na kung mababa ang pwesto o kung ano ang magiging work ko after this. Atleast I still have the face to tell my kids na I never quit in pursuing my dreams yun na lang iniisip ko, kung anuman ang kahinatnan ng plans ko, so be it. happy pa din.;)

4 yrs din ginugol ko. i became a CPA at the age 25. i am currently working in an audit firm. sa totoo lang minsan nakakahiya na yung mga manager sa office mas matanda pa ako. kaya i try to not to talk about my age sometimes. haha :P nasaisip ko rin if i will be too old to compete with youngsters, but whenever i feel low i just think na i wouldn't be what i am not if i hadnt took my first degree. and yung urgency to be successful and drive mas matindi sa akin ngayon kasi naghahabol ako sa oras. for me its a good thing kasi alam ko na ngayon san direksyon ko

Less than 5% ng new hire is 23 and above. Ang laking tulong din ng friends sa pag-survive ng first few years, and napansin ko sa medyo mas matanda na, madami sa kanila lone wolf. Pero their EQ makes them stand out naman because they are more patient and mature.

Medyo easier ko nakikita ang 25. Pero kung 35 tapos mag-au-audit firm ka... Kung ok sayo na yung partner is younger than you... and it doesn't affect your ego. Go lang.

Many Partners become Partner as early as 31.

^wala namang prob sa friends pagdating sa akin kasi yung classmate ko colleague ko na rin ngayon so may kinabibilangan na ko. hehe and eversince i am really an introvert waaa

may baby na rin pala ako. i was preggy when i was reviewing. so nangyari lahat lahat all in the same year. graduation, childbirth and board exam. haha. mahirap mag-audit pag mommy na kasi shempre pagod and lumalaki si baby ng hindi ko nasusubaybayan dahil sa OT. pero iniisip ko na lang na ayusin ko na lang so I can get out and land a better job ASAP. if everything goes well 3 or 4 yrs old si baby nun so hindi pa irn naman ako huli. so it all boils down to looking at the positive side ng mga hirap na pagdadaanan mo.

anyway sa 35 i think di naman nakakahiya na oldie esp. if may work experience ka na before. hindi ka naman tumambay lang. may edge since you've experienced working in the corpo world

thanks sa reply sisses rae, ellesur and meowskitty! very, very nice and helpful inputs. nakarating na sa kinauukulan.

kahit ako naisip ko parang late na yung 35 to start. pero come to think of it, may nagtetake nga ng bar 50 na. tsaka life begins at 40 raw, so advance pa siya, hehe. pag gusto kaya diba?

^ Mahigpit, not only with 2nd coursers. Mahigpit sila over-all. Quota-course sya. Pero with most universities, quota-course na din talaga ang accountancy. I don't know what their process is sa mga may graduate degree na. All I know is yung mga guma-graduate ng accountancy from UP,  usually less than or around a hundred lang every year.. as opposed to other universities.
