Teaching as career

I've always wanted to teach English to high school students. Nevertheless, I didn't take up Education back in college. I still want to pursue that career, even on a part-time basis. Any teachers here? I'd be grateful for tips. What specific requirements will I need?

in my 2 and a half years experience as a newly graduate college instructor, i found out that students are not that appreciative on education and learning.

---i am talking in general terms... i'm sure if i won't explicitly state this may sasagot na "di naman lahat". obviously if you are making a generalization, there will be exceptions --

many just want to get the grades and the diploma thinking that those two pieces of paper are enough for a better future forgetting the fact that the more important thing is whats one's head.

anyway, i unfortunately cannot answer what are the requirements to become a highschool teacher.

high schol teacher ba gusto mo? kasi ang alam ko hindi tayo pede magturo sa high school and elementary...pero if you really like...you can take 18 units para makapag board exam ka...i took this 18 units last 2004. because im a graduate of bsmath maj in computer science...eh wala ako makita work so i decided na mag aral ulit...

after mo makuha [textspeak!] 18 units pede ka magreview...kung ano trip mo...then you can take the LET na..and automatic tayo sa high school pede magturo..tapos ang major ko is math...kasi ang course ko before is bsmath..

but as of today..i'm teaching college students every saturday. khayman is right. you need a lot of patience. kasi ang mga bata ngayon ay wala talagang pakealam sa pag aaral nila...except nalang for those na nag aaral sa government school..kasi pag private, ay grabe talaga...ang tatamad kasi mayayaman ang parents...pero ngayon natanggap na ko in a govt school ok naman sila..hindi sa dinidiscourage kita pero sa totoo lang ang sarap ng feeling kapag nakita mo [textspeak!] students mo eh naapply sa ibang bagay [textspeak!] tinuro mo..parang may sense of fulfillment talaga..o dba?

additional info: sa mga katulad natin na 4 yr course kinuha medyo mababa pa ang per hour natin.pero magtake ka ng masteral...laki na ng per hour mo. minimum siguro 250/hour...

ooops...i forgot to mention.... ang tawag dun sa 18 units  at Comprehensive Program Teacher/Teaching Education or CPTE. meron offer nyan ang Philippine Normal University... pero hindi ako dun nag aral..sa province ako eh..

hay salamat at may nag post din re teaching kasi right now, I'm in a little bit confused whether I'd go back into teaching. I am a teacher by profession but with the pay scale our teachers get, I've decided to take another career path. Now, parang gusto ko bumalik.

Redflame, magkano ba sweldo ng teachers on the average ngayon? Is the pay for online teachers (teaching foreigners) better ba?

part time lang po ako  every saturday lang...nag start ako last 2005 nagturo po ako sa maliit na private school...they are offering vocational courses kaya medyo maliit ang rate nila per hour.imagine 60 pesos po..when i transferred into a govt school 100 ang rate nila per hour. wala pa po akong masteral.

[textspeak!] boss ko nagtuturo sa mga malalaking school...like lyceum, trinity sa qc. tapos na sya mag doctoral. and sa tingin ko mga 300  na ang pinakakamababang bigay sa knya per hour..d nya kc sinasabi [textspeak!] exact rate hehe...[textspeak!] isang officemate ko naman po kc masteral ang natapos 250 ang rate pero hour sa arellano.

kung ako papipiliin. d ako magfufull time.as in never... ang full time kasi may tax tapos magkano lang ang salary. pero ang part time you can choose a schedule and wala pang tax.  ang full time po ang salary 18k ata...kapag sa sikat na school ka dito sa manila  [textspeak!] gf kc ng friend ko dito sa POVEDA ata...yan po ang alam ko..

ako din, gusto ko itry, kaya lang nung may pinahawak sakin na mga trainees samin naisip ko di pala gano kadali yun, may mga taong sobrang itetest ka kung alam mo ba sinasabi mo, napaisip tuloy ako kung gusto ko ba talaga magturo, gusto ko lang kasi siya as a part time job kaya lang mapapabayaan ko for sure yung job ko talaga pag ginawa ko to, which is, very risky.

ako sin super confuse na ako. my course was engineering. then nung nag resign ako sa job ko last year naisip ko lang bigla why not try ko mag turo. i really didnt have any background whatsoever. tapos kumuha ako ng TESOL certification and i really enjoyed it! then i worked as an online English teacher for 4 months. pero kaka resign ko lang din dun. pero i really want to pursue teaching. i've been reading about yun sa UP open  university, yun certificate program nila Professional Teaching Certification Program. it provides non educ grads with 18 units. i don't know if this is a good move....

i'm also an engineering grad and taught college straight out of college.

i don't think its a good move financially. engineering jobs are bring a lot more income than teaching but of course not everyone is as mukhang pera as i am haahahahahah.

anyway IMHO maganda din sa teaching if pala aral ka. ako tamad eh. you could get scholarships to finish a masters or phd. plus it is also fulfilling.

be ready lang to find ways how to augment your income or how to take care of yourself and family financially. or if me mamanahin ka and super rich family mo then you won't have that problem.

i may go back teaching siguro pag malapit na mag retire. sort of passing my knowledge to the next generation.

engineering wise, i also think it is a lot more effective to teach if you have industry experience. yung tinuturo mo talagang kung ano nangyayari sa totong buhay or industry di lang yung nababasa mo sa text book

if you're really set on teaching it's best to take the 18 units of education and then take the LET. the LET is DEAD EASY. here in the phils teaching is not financially rewarding, but if you try abroad the compensation is really high. especially if you have a master's degree in education. my cousin is leaving for washington dc later this year for a middle school teaching job. she has a master's degree in educ from assumption and she's going to be paid - get this - $9,000 per month as a teacher. that's TWICE as much as a regular LET-passer teaching in the US. that's roughly Php 430,000 per month. so it's a good financial move.

last feb 25 and march 25 may exam for cpt course sa pnu.  ngayon i'm just waiting for the results of my friend para sabay kami mag enrol. i'm working as an analyst and an engineering grad (ie) pero malakas din ang inclination ko to teaching...

try mo yun next year or you can always take a tesol course na offered kung saan..

I also like to teach kaso nga for me to do that I have to have a masteral in architecture. Sayang talaga kasi nga I don't have budget for that. Hindi ko kasi naisip yun nung bata pa ako at single. Ngayong may anak na, mukhang mahirap na. Malay natin...I'm still hoping.

Hay naku sis, sobrang totoo talaga to! Kaya ako, kahit teacher by profession ako di ko kinaya ang pay scale sa mga teachers dito sa Pinas kahit sabihin pa nila mukha akong pera. I have to survive coz I only depend on my salary survival. I had to be practical.

Kaya ko lang naisip ulit mag teach ngayon kasi nasa abroad si hubby, at least me back up support na. Pero... 1st consideration ko pa din yong salary rate. At least man lang 15K. Pag bababa pa jan, mag "callgirl" nalang ulit ako.

Sis, matanong nga...kumusta naman ang compensation as an Online English teacher? Balita ko malaki daw? Magkano ba sis, if you wouldn't mind kasi balak kong mag apply...

ako sis...i took up CPTE...18 units...plan ko nga sana magtake ng board exam this coming aug ata or june..kaya lang may inaapplyan ako ng ibang work kaya bka d matuloy..

sis tekla1104, the pay is okay naman for online english teachers. i'm actually applying next week. they pay around 8k for part-timers. that's 4 hours a day, 5 days a week. i'm not sure about sis latinagirl's company though. the one i'm eyeing is in ortigas if you want, sabay tayo mag-apply!
