Sepsis

magandang araw po sa lahat... my name is marben and i have just registered in this forum.  while I understand that this is for women, i decided to join to ask some advice/help for my sister.  i hope ok po sa mga members and at sa admin.  ganito po ang case ng sister ko:

1.  first child has died because of sepsis and the child was only 3 months old..the child was born in a private maternity ospital sa cebu city.
2.  2nd child is ok and is now 2 yrs and 3 months. the child was born sa lying in lang sa cebu city..
3.  in god's grace, nabiyayaan pa ng pang 3rd na anak who is now 1 month old at nasa ospital as of today (mar 8, 2016) fighting for sepsis na naman. the child was born sa health center sa pangantucan, bukidnon.

eto po ang aking kelangan ng advice:

1. ano po kaya ang naging problema ng sister ko bakit 2 times ng nangyari etong sepsis?
2. worried kami sa 2nd child kung may traces ng same problem sa dalawang bata. kaya gusto namin patignan sa pedia/hematologist. not sure kung eto po ba ang tama. ang objective po namin ay ma check ang 2nd child na totally healthy at wala syang issue na kagaya ng sa dalawang bata.
3. pano po namin pakisamahan ang aking sister na makayanan nya pinagdadaanan nya ngayon..

sana po may maka pag advice po sa inyo...marami pong salamat...

salamat po link na nabigay at nabasa ko rin po...eto yung latest update ng doctor, ang sepsis ay nagagamot mostly antibiotic depende sa infection...pero may duda ang doctor na may metabolic problem ang bata dahil sa napaka acidic ng kanyang dugo.. na new born screening naman ang bata at wala naman nakitang problema so ang ginawa ng doctor ay pina "EXPANDED NEW BORN SCREENING nya ang bata at sa ngayon ay iniintay pa ang result..it would take 7-14 days bago maibigay ng NIH ang result..

Regarding new born screening eto ay ngayon ko nalaman.

1. ang karaniwang new born screening ay 6 items lang ang tini-test. in case sa aming bata, eto lang ang na test sa kanya at negative naman.

2. yung expanded new born screening na pinagawa ng doctor ay ibang mga items pa.  ngayun ko nalaman na there are more than 20 items ang covered ng expanded new born screening at bago lang eto pinatupad sa Pilipinas.  sa ibang bansa more than 70 items sila. in other words, may mga pinatest pa ang doctor na bukod sa 6 items na basic new born screening.

kaya dapat pala sa mga expected mother, expanded new born screening ang ipagawa nyo sa baby para makasiguro...

^Sis ang alam ko if may infection si baby pag kapanganak. Usually nakukuha kay mommy during birth, but not all the time. Kaya important na infection free si mommy din.

But usually, infection kay baby nadedetect pagkapanganak kasi may mga tests, so important na mascreen si baby pagkalabas kay mommy, para mabigyan ng antibiotics.

In case of infection, the baby usually stays in NICU or nursery for several days para ma treat. In such cases, di sila ma room in with mommy.

from what i read, sepsis occurs within 24 hours of delivery or within 3 months from birth. so it seems that the second child will not have it if ahe didn't get it when she was born.

like sis coco_cola said, one of the causes is that the mom may have an infection during pregnancy or at birth.

Neonatal sepsis (sepsis in the newborn period) is caused by infection that is passed on from the mother to the infant during the later stages of the pregnancy.
Meron din sepsis that can occur later on in life, kahit sa adults but that is usually caused by overwhelming infection and a weakened immune system.
Did the Mom get regular prenatal check up? Kasi from the prenatal check ups, there is screening for infection early on and at least madedetect if may infection at any time of the pregnancy. Baka kailangan sa OB siya talaga magpatingin at hindi lang sa midwife or lying inn clinic.
Nag newborn screening ba sa mga bata?
For the 2nd child, meron ba siyang regular pedia? If not, then I suggest you look for a regular pedia who can monitor her health status. Definitely hindi naman siya magkakaroon ng neonatal sepsis since she is passed the newborn period but if there is an immunodeficiency problem in the family then it would be better that she is monitored.
May I know the gender of the children? Wala bang history of immunodeficiency ang family niyo? Any history of early death ng male children or kahit sa teens?
I suggest that you look for someone to counsel your sister so she can process what is happening to her and her family.

tama si sis leletmd. there are many reasons why an infant can end up with sepsis. it's best to seek a doctor's help and go to a hospital for the correct managament of the baby. term ba mga babies ng sis mo?

Since there have been 2 incidents of early death in your sister's family, metabolic disorders and immunodeficiency should be investigated. It is good that the doctor is being pro-active in looking for a cause.
