Play logic games, where you have to figure things out.  Esp now with ipad, smartphone, tablets, dami free games.  Exercise ng brain cells yon.

And read,  read about things you're interested in,  di pwede i force mo sarili mo to read
about quantum physics kung di mo naman maiintindihan.

Reading a lot helps. Then discuss what you've read with someone (make sure they've read it too). If you don't have anyone to discuss it with, join a book club. You also make friends that way.

Playing adventure/puzzle games. Or doing crossword puzzles, the more difficult the better (I'm a crossword-addict).

If you love to travel, DIY your trip. That will definitely make your brain cells happy. I do a lot of travel itineraries for myself, my family and friends and it really is a good challenge.

IMO, variety is the key to it all.

My Lolo always had a sharp mind for business.   After his stroke, he complained to me often that he feels bumagsak his mind, and baka he can maintain conversations only with people he used to assess as  "slow" or "tange".  ("Lolo, how dare you say that!!!  You talk to me often, what  are you saying?!"     Lol).

I brought him to see a psychiatrist -- who encouraged him to develop new hobbies,  to keep him from obsessing about his "before" mental agility. She said, he will eventually regain it, as his physical condition improves.   But to be realistic -- he cannot expect to drive himself as physically hard as before.
So there -- one must be healthy to mentally thrive.  (I don't know how it is with Steve Hawkins though)

So, I got him to take piano lessons, Ikebana, Spanish language lessons ( it fueled memories, he used to speak it) so he could read books in Spanish, got together a weekly mahjong quorum for him.  Eventually, he stopped complaining & being tense. He regained his wit, joie de vivre  & "shark" business mind.  But he also learned to moderate his interests & concerns (eh na tuwa Lola ko kasi he turned  into a certified "Good Boy", huli man. Lol).

Moms with young children, and teens who still talk to them  (haha).  -  hardly complain their mind gets dull.  But some technocrats, academic people --  I hear some complain of boredom, inability to keep up with new technology,  stagnation.

So there, challenge your mind with a variety of big and small things, specially those your mind is unfamiliar with.

answering sudokus and crossword puzzle helps daw. it's a good exercise for the mind. eto ang kahinaan ko, ayoko nung as in todo isip. the knowledge (lol) doesn't come to me pag todo ko pinagiisipan. it should be a stored knowledge for me. mabilis ako magretrieve ng stored knowledge.
critical thinking, mej meh lang ako.
