I passed the Civil Service exam professional eligibility, before I went abroad, Ive always wanted to work in the government, mainly because of the benefits.

i'm applying for a govt position, 14k yung salary plus allowances. i still don't know if i will still pursue it, reason is that my salary in my current job is 3K higher. but i'm not happy with my current job right now due to management issues and the lack of work and life balance.
my sister is also working in that government office so sa kanya ako nagpapasa ng resume. she has been working there for like 10 years already so i guess ok naman ang benefits dun, nakapagpundar na din sila ng hubby nya ng house and a car. madami din silang bonus dun kasi income-generating sila, so kapag malaki yung income, malaki din yung bonus at konti lang sila. medyo kakilala ko na din yung ibang mga tao dun.. ang issue ko lang nga is yun nga entry level position yung sa gov't at yung sa private company ko now medyo hindi na. tapos lagi sila nakakapg-out-of-town kasi di masyadong mahigpit sa leaves tapos flexitime sila.
one more thing is yung office ko right now medyo mas malapit kesa sa office ng govt agency although kasama ko naman ate ko dun.. still confused.. but i'm leaning on leaving my current company coz of burn out..

Gusto ko din mag-apply sa goverment agencies pero ayoko sana sa linya ng course ko. Nag-apply na ko sa NCCA sa Manila. Sana matanggap ako.

@Boj - yan ang try ko next year. kinatamaran ko mag complete ng documentary requirements this year kaya di ako nag pass ng application e.

I think hindi fair ang compensation sa gov't. My husband is a cpa board passer, ang entry nya is 16k lang way back 2006, pero ok lang kasi madami talagang bonuses and my allowance na 10k tax-free. may increase din yearly. The thing is, yung accounting clerk nila sumasahod ng 66k a month plus allowance pa yun kahit subordinate nya lang. Sa govt mas importante yung tagal mo sa service kesa sa performance.

ako walang backer pero dun ako nag-ojt dati. marami rin akong officemates na walang backer pero nga nakapasok din sila.

Sis cool_chique, I'll admit it's a really tough series of exam, and they say it's the hardest government exam in the country, even more difficult than the bar exams, as some claim. Less than 5 % make it to the final cut and eventually get appointed by the President.

Any four year college degree will do. No particular course, as long as you are well versed in international and domestic issues, know a foreign language, even basic lang, can write and speak better than the average person. Even new grads can twke the exam. It has an age limit, though.  (36 yeras old).

@ ellesur - there is such thing as step increment sa gov't so matagal na officemate ng husband mo kaya umabot na sa ganung level ang salary nya.  Depende sa standardized salary level ang entry salary kaya mababa ang starting salary ni husband mo even if CPA pa sya.  Nakatie-up kase yan sa SG position.

@baby_maryen- while its true na marami ang nakakapasok sa gov't offices dahil may kakilala, ganun din sa private sector (I worked both sa gov't and private).  Network is definitely an advantage but that doesn't mean na lahat ng nakapasok sa gov't may backer.  Ako for instance, nakapasok ako on my own.  Ganun din yung iba ko pang mga kasama noon sa GOCC na pinasukan ko.  Magtanong tannong ka lang sa mga kakilala mo kung saan may open then just send your resume.  Good luck!

Kung matagal ka nang nagwowork or matagal ka na di nakakapagschool, super need mo talaga magrefresh ng memory esp sa math. Although algebra lang naman. Pero ako kasi non, medyo kinakalawang na sa math problems kaya nagbrush up ako ng konti. I bought yung reviewer tapos aral siguro ng two days (mga 2-3 hours per day).

And don't forget to review for the section na may Philippine Constitution. Di ko alam na may ganon na part. Kaya hinulaan ko lang mga sagot ko don.

Don't worry, madali lang. Parang mahabang quiz or college entrance exam.

Masarap sa govt kasi may security of tenure ka though mababa ang salary compare sa private kasi nakabase ang salary sa standard salary ng lahat ng government employees. ok naman ang benefits

agree naman ako na hinde kelangan ng backer. kasi nakapasok din ako on my own. dati encoder lang ako pero ngayon officer na. mahirap lang ang promotion. di kasi dito automatic ang promotion. kelangan mo mag-apply sa mga higher na vacant positions. swerte lang ako na iyong office na napuntahan ko eh me vacant position. since qualified ako  i got the position. one thing more dito kasi  merong mga contractual  so minsan sila ang kinukuha for the position kaya di nakakapasok iyong applicant na iba. syempre may edge iyong nasa loob dahil alam na nya iyong work at saka meron ng trust and confidence sa kanya iyong boss nya. tawag nila jan ay management prerogative

re work load. depende kung saang office ka mapupunta at depende rin sa position. pag nasa project ka sobra ang pressure para ka nasa private marami ka deliverables. based on my experience lagi ang dami rush wala na ako social life

wala monetray equivalent ang overtime since nagpalabas si GMA ng austerity Measure AO103. so kelangan magtipid kaya compensatory na lang. acctng lang namin may bayad pero may limit iyon . di mo lahat ma-claim na pera. ginagwang compensatory na lang, kaya lang di ka naman din maka-absent sa dami ng load mo.

i've been working in government since 2004.

work load - sa PR division kasi ko ever since so i can say mabigat din ang work load kasi i'm working with the media, a 24/7 industry.

compensation - it really depends on the position and its corresponding salary grade. implemented na ngayon yung new salary scheme which is given in 4 tranches, so every year may increase kami until we reach the 4th tranche which is the actual amount approved by law. so i'll be receiving around 31k (gross) in 2012 and onwards. mabagal man ang increase pero somehow i manage, but i'm currently single so di ko alam if this will suffice pag nagka-pamilya nako.

environment - corruption and politics, i say pareho naman meron nyan sa govt at private. pero ako iniiwasan ko magwork dun sa mga "notorious" agencies (sorry kung may matamaan) para din for peace of mind. yung backer system oo existing yan pero ako rin nakapasok sa sariling sikap. there are safeguards in place, yung appointments kelangan dumaan sa CSC at sila ang sumusuri kung sumusunod sa qualifications yung new hire o hindi. pag hindi, disapproved ang appointment and considered void.

regarding the CS exam, i dont agree na mahirap sya. IMO depende yan sa educational background mo. CS exam is just like a college entrance exam. i don't agree it's tougher than the bar dahil lang mababa ang passing rate (10-12% annual ave.) IMO if all bar examinees would take the CS exam (as in sila lang) we might get almost 100% passing rate. so my point is nasa educ background talaga sya. and of course as with any other exam, kelangan din magprepare. honestly when i took the exam di ako nagreview. so yung mga tanong about Phil Constitution, etc., di ko alam ang sagot. i passed with 85% and i was dissatisfied, i think i would have done better kung nagreview man lang ako ng konti.

I agree.  May corruption pareho sa private and gov't.  I guess na sa personal value yan ng tao.  But I have to say na mas mahirap umiwas pag nasa gov't ka.  Isa ito sa reasons kaya umalis ako sa public service, di ko kinaya.

On civil service exam naman: I would say na malayo sa bar exam ang eligibility exam.  I have to agree kay sis igenna na parang college exam lang.  Tip lang sa mga kukuha ng CS exam 1. Read about current events.  2. Sharpen your reading comprehension skills 3. Review consumer math and basic eco principles 4. Keep cool during exam 5. Take lang ng take hanggang pumasa.
