There can never be two queen bees in one hive but that said, in my experience (and that of my mother before me), the main problem with in-laws is rooted in money.  Most Filipinos have this culture of dependency and hardly any plan for retirement.  I have an aunt who thinks of her sons as "alkansyas."  This mentality is basically the parent thinking that their children owe them for having fed, clothed and educated them for the first 20 years (or more) of their lives.

They expect that their children should pay them back and most do.  Problems start when suddenly, their child who gives their monthly salary to them, falls in love, gets married and has a family of their own.  This equates to more responsibilities, but with the same amount of pay (for the most part).  Of course, they welcome the grandchildren, but I’ve noticed that people get cranky once they can’t spend as much as they used to.  Also, the attention of said children now lie elsewhere and moms can get jealous (I find this true especially for sons).

I once read an article in the newspaper that it is unfair for parents to burden their children even more considering they know firsthand how financially hard things are when one is starting out in life (unless you were born with a silver spoon and has a trust fund).

I agree with the article.  My parents do too and they were the first to tell me (since I was little) that children do not owe their parents anything because it was not their idea to be born in the first place.  It is the OBLIGATION of parents to feed, clothe and educate their child.  For my parents, it is nice if the children want to VOLUNTARILY contribute, but it should not be forced.

My parents aren't rich.  In fact, the first time my father was ever able to buy a car was after he retired from the Air Force after 25 years.  And do you know what kind of car he bought? A third-hand chop-chop van which conked out periodically. They even reminisce about the time they only had Php 100 between the two of them until the next pay day.  But despite all this, they made an effort to build their nest egg for retirement.  This meant still having a cassette player even when everyone else had the CD version (I had a classmate who once ridiculed me that our home "sound system" looked like a toy).

Now that my parents are both retired, they are reaping the benefits of their retirement plan and have yet to ask us for cash.  They even gave me back the monthly contributions I used to give them so that I could use it for my internship abroad (turns out my mother just stashed everything in a drawer).

And now that I am married, I have decided to follow in the footsteps of my parents and save up for retirement.  That way, we will not have to depend on our children for the groceries, medicine, the electricity and water bills, etc.

Many people tell me that there’s no room for savings due to large bills.  I’ve always believed that kung gusto, may paraan, kung ayaw, may dahilan. If people were told that they would get a huge sum of cash for free if they just did something for an X amount of time, they will find a way.

:) Pwedeng paki-post dito yung link so I can read it too? :) Thanks!

If I can be President siguro I'll find a way para mabago ang ganitong mentality.

Haha.

^That's ok sis bluewinkle. :)

Mga sis may suggestion po ako. What if everytime we post something we don't like about our ILs, we also add a Post Script kung ano naman yung mga bagay na mabuti tungkol sa kanila. Para ma-neutralize yung acid that we feel everytime we think of them. Hehe.

I thought of starting a new thread for that pero baka walang sumagot. Haha!

I want to share my story here.. It's not that we have conflicts with each other(MIL). Ako lang ata. (ewan ko lang!) We live in different houses pero 1 jeepney ride away lang sila. I seldom visit her sa house nya..for the reason na ayoko syang kausap.

As in nasusuka sya sa amoy ng lugar at bahay..naduduwal. One and only apo nya yung anak ko ha!

Asus paawa teh??? Kaya mo naman pala bumili muna bakit nagpa-follow up ka pa. You're so good in pretending na kawawa when in fact ang suerte nyo dahil walang kahirap hirap may sustento kayo. sarap nyo paguntugin ng anak mo, magsama na lang kaya kayo >:( >:( >:(

^Sis proudmama nakaka-relate ako sayo kasi si hubby ko rin ang nagsu-sustento sa mama nya at sister nya who's a single mom sa 5 yr old kid na special child. Before we got married nag-worry ako that they will be a burden to him forever since matagal silang nasanay na sinu-sustentohan lang. I tried persuading my hubby to make them work, kahit hindi malaki sweldo basta makatulong kahit konti man lang. I even tried befriending them (MIL and SIL) to somehow convince and influence them to be more productive with their lives. For now wala pa ako nakikitang hope, and it may be that forever silang su-sustentuhan ni hubby. But you know what? I also realized that when I fret over something I can't really control, ako yung maaapektuhan. You don't feel it right now but if you're always upset with the situation (and provided you've done everything but it's still there), it will eventually make you physically sick if you don't learn to accept your situation. What helped me accept my my hubby's "burden" is to think that,  since kumikita naman ng maayos ang asawa ko, even if he gives to his family monthly, it won't deprive us of our necessities. Konting pigil lang sa mga luxury, or medyo delayed lang ang pagbili ng dream house and car, pero darating din kami dun as long as I will also be his partner in reaching for our dreams. Mag-work din ako para I'll have my own money. And most especially I'm thankful that even though hubby has excess "baggage", he's still a good provider to me, hindi katulad ng ibang husbands ng friends ko na hindi maasahan at babae pa ang bumubuhay. I also pray na si Lord na lang ang bahalang magbago sa ILs ko, because I've done my best, and I'll just leave it up to Him. Ultimately, in accepting them, I help myself and our marriage because if I don't, mahihirapan si hubby with added pressure from an upset wife. Just my two cents. :)

^sis janix thank you. actually hindi naman din ako ganon kasama, I even prayed about my inis to them. kaya lang everytime na i try to be nice bigla may pangyayari or may gagawin sila na mababalik na naman yung inis ko.  tama ka, mahirap may kinaiinisan because eventually pati sarili mo maaapektuhan, stress tama ba? ayoko din naman ng ganitong feeling kasi lagi akong may nacocomment tungkol sa family ni hubby. and right kadugo nya pa din sila and syempre nasa Pilipinas tayo nasa culture na ata natin ang "sustento for life" :-[

I so agree with blue winkle. kami din ni hubby we're trying to save and maginvest habang bata pa para pagtanda di na problema ng mga anak namin and may matatanggap pa silang mana from us. i don't want them to go through what my husband is doing now.

^That's sad sis. Ilang taon na kayo married? Baka naman pwede mo pa kausapin si hubby about it. Basta make sure tama ang timing mo, hindi kayo pagod, nakakain na and wala istorbo. Ayun humanap ka ng tyempo na good mood sya (i heard good mood daw sila lagi after mag-make-love with us). haha.
And then umpisahan mo mo muna sa pagtanong ng "Hon tingin mo ba dapat na tayo mag-isip about investment or our retirement kasi diba we don't know what tomorrow will bring". Ang mga dapat nyong naka-set aside are the following:

1. Emergency fund
2. Life insurance/pension plan
3. Investments (depends on what kind of deposit you are familiar with)

Kung may anak kayo, education fund, etc.

So hopefully, if he has financial goals, he will realize na nagtatapon pala sya ng pera at dapat pala nacha-chanel na sa mga investment vehicles ang pera nyo ngayon. Unti-untiin mo sis. Kung pwede lang make him think that it was his idea, so he will cooperate more readily with you.

"Claws" talaga? Nyahaha .

SIguro lang naisip nila na for how many years nasa kanila attention at full money ni hubby ngayon nagasawa nabawasan na. Hubby kase is older sakin ng 18years sis kaya siguro nageexpect sila masyado sakin.

- etc... etc... etc... and so on and so forth bwisit!!

Like kanina - actually this kind if incident happend a couple of times in the past, kala ko natuto na din niyang i-respect na may differences kami - guess I was wrong... may kid has been sick since monday, ang taas ng fever, and I don't have yaya to help me out a bit - not that i'm complaining.

I dont have problem with my IL but........ there are things na hinde ko gusto about them, specially my mother in law.. pansin ko lang since nung nagwwedding planning pa lang (overseas si hubby), parang gusto nya lahat may input sya, dapat ganto, dapat ganyan.. now na buntis ako, OA sila.. parents ko nga, hinde ako binebaby, they want me to be "tagtag" para normal delivery..

I've always thought that I was lucky sa mga in-laws, although di ako close sa kanila. Never pa kami nagaway or anything.

Until last Tuesday. Paguwi nya, he was so pikon and he told me why.  Pinagtatawanan daw ako ng mom and older sister nya kasi tumaba ako.  They were making a joke out of my weight.  What's worse is that ang bungad agad ng ate nya sa kanya is wala na ba kami pagasa magkaanak. It was really hurtful and insensitive.  It pains us na nga na we haven't been able to conceive tapos ganun pa maririnig ko from them.  As if gusto namin na wala pa kaming anak.  And on the subject of my weight, sana lang maisip na di naman nakakatawa ang gawin kang joke kasi mataba ka.

Hurtful talaga

@sis babykat: sis, I can see that your MIL and SIL have self esteem issues. Ganito kasi yan, if they point out and laugh at other people's flaws (your weight), they would feel superior than you kasi it feeds their ego, they think "Poor babykat, antaba na, buti pa kami sexy, hahaha!" ganun. So para hindi ka mapikon isipin mo na lang it's their way of coping with their own insecurities. I suggest

1. Minimize interaction with them
2. Do your best to be more fit
3. Kill them with kindness (mahirap gawin ito, pero what you can do is pray that God gives you the heart to still love them and understand that they too are dealing with their own fears)

The best revenge sis ay ang magpaganda. Kahit matagal na process ang magpa-payat pero in other ways you can dress better, take better care of your skin, make sure your hair is healthy and shiny, etc. Para when they see you again, mapapahiya sila sa pangmamata sayo, they will look dugyot sa tabi mo. hehe.
