I'm home-based ever since I graduated from college in 2009. I had a baby so I had no choice.

First job I had, Rarejob.com, student pa lang ako nagwwork na ko dito.
Dati kasi puro up student/alumni kinukuha nila.
Maganda ang income ko dito for 1 year medyo problema ko lang as my baby started growing..

So, I tried odesk in late october ng 2009 while doing rarejob. I landed a job after a month. kailangan kasi dun sa umpisa, magbid ka lang ng magbid sa mga work na kaya mo tapos galingan mo lang yung proposal at pagandahin mo profile mo. magtake ka ng mga tests din.
Ngayon, $3-$4 ang base rate ko. 4 projects all at the same time. Every day, may nag-ooffer sa akin ng work kaso, my hands are already full..

I am enjoying having time for my kids and okay din ang income. Back then, I work in a school. Natoxic ako so I resigned. I hate the politics and the demands of the job. And then, I got pregnant so I have to find a job. Nagtutor ako while I'm pregnant. It was just a few hours  a day pero okay naman ang pay kasi medyo well-off mga tutees ko.

When I gave birth, I have to stop it 'coz I went home dito sa province. My savings are slowly dwindling and my expenses are starting to rise so I knew I have to do something (I'm a single parent). I always read GT back when I was pregnant and I was reading about breast pumps. I wanted to buy one of the high-ends one and someone mentioned working on Odesk and saving up for a breast pump. So I started researching about Odesk here on GT and on other blogs. I learned the ropes and tips and tricks of the trade. I spruced up my profile and composed a good cover letter. Then I started applying.

Luckily, I got hired for a full time position within a week. This all happened last November. Now, I am still working on Odesk and it has given me a lot of blessings! I love that I can always be there for my kids and that I can see them as they grow up. They are only children once so I want to take advantage of this time where they still need me and I'm the most important person in their lives (I have two boys kasi). Other advantages include no need to commute to and from work, flexible time, and great work opportunities. I am now working on a great company and I really love my job. It will also happen to you.  ;)

Hi there! I've just followed this thread because I'm thinking of leaving my current job.

I'm interested in a home-based job. It's either that or a career shift.

I've been reading about all your posts but I'm wondering if having a home-based job can pay for all my expenses and other financial responsibilities. I already have an offer to work on a per project basis from my former employer and I want to add more to the table, so I'm thinking of getting an online job as well.

Are there others here who resigned from their full-time jobs to pursue a home-based job?

I also want to start a family already that's why I think having a home-based job is the best option. Thank you. :)

sis A/K/A, I've been working online for the past 6 years now and it's actually more financially rewarding than working in a company.  I quit from a brand management position in a large retail company because I was too stressed out.  I was also taking my MBA that time kaya I need to find a way to support my studies.  Syempre sa una medyo di ganoon kalaki kasi you're just building your portfolio but as soon as you get clients, sunud-sunod na yan. :)  I was able to buy a brand new car (without any loan) just by working at home. I don't think I could've bought a car if I worked in a company.  Because of online work, I was able to save 1M.  Although there are times talaga na I want to work in a company again, I mean I've been doing this for 6 years na and I'm getting bored sometimes. :)

I'm also getting married next year so I want to continue working at home, I want to have more time for my family kasi.

^ sa byahe ka lang naman makakalibre kapag home based. i cannot guarantee a stress free job nor a part time job na singlaki ng sinasahod mo. everything depends on your skills. if your skills require stress, then mai-stress ka talaga - not to mention stressful clients. also, once na-addict ka na sa work - dahil nakaka-addict kumuha ng jobs when you have more time, dagdag stress pa din yun.

mabuburyot ka rin sa bahay kasi kung more than 40 hours per week ang workload mo, sometimes you can't go out anymore. like regular 9-5ers di rin stable kasi mas madaling magbawas ang mga clients ng trabaho kapag wala silang budget. unlike kapag regular ka sa company kailangan nila ng matinding reason para alisin ka at may sagutin sila sa DOLE kapag nagkaganun - ideally that is. pero di rin naman nangyayari.

pero kung masipag ka naman, di mahilig lumabas, mahilig nakababad sa PC, madali lang ang work. mas inspired ka pa kung may kids ka kasi you don't have to leave them behind. but you have to have an awesome time management skills kapag ganun. odesk man or other home based work sites, pare pareho lang. mas user friendly lang (i think) ang odesk.

Uhlee,  aside from Odesk, you can look for online jobs at bestjobs.ph, craigslist (Manila), jobsdb, and minsan jobstreet.com.ph. Just use the keyword "home" to filter out all jobs that are not home-based. All of my clients came from those different sites.

I agree with Tigerlily na nakakaburyot ang online work. Actually, it's not for everyone.  Everyone can do it but not everyone can last.  If you're a people person, mahihirapan ka magonline work dahil ang katapat mo ay computer 24/7. Honestly, nakakastress ang online work kasi you have to immediately respond to emails, even on weekends. Kaya parang 7 days a week ako nagwowork minsan. :(

Lastly, pinaka-ayaw ko sa online work eh it's not permanent.  For me, it's the major disadvantage when you do freelance work. Mga tipong the next day eh sasabihin sa'yo na they can't afford your services anymore, bye.  Nakakaloka.  Pinakamatagal kong client eh almost 2 years lang.  Lahat one year or less. :D

My homebase job right now are PTC and mini task work lang. oDesk sounds so stressful to me. LOL ;D

I have the thread here sa GT:

Microworkers

All you do are post/vote/like/survey sa FB/Twitter/Website/Blog etc. Only mini task you're done in 3-5mins. Earnings are small din like it range from $.10 cents to $3 or more.

PTC Sites with payment proofs screenshots.

Here's my blog for work at home: http://workathomeptc-joyearnd.blogspot.com/

If interested kayo just PM me or visit the link sa thread ko and post your q's. :D

Hello everyone! :) I'm a nurse. Unfortunately, it is so difficult to find a job in the nursing field.  Since my mom , aunt and grandma are all homebased workers, I also became one. We are now a family of homebased workers! :D I used to write articles under my grandma's account but it can be tiring especially if I do not like the topic.  :( I also had a bad experience when I wrote reviews for a fellow Filipina blogger but she did not pay me. I thought that she was reliable since she paid my sister but I was wrong. Sayang din ang 3,000 pesos and of course, the time I spent writing.  :'(

Last May, I was finally hired full-time by an Australian employer. I enjoy this job more than writing articles because I get to learn a lot of things about seo. I edit videos, create site graphics, manage wordpress sites, social bookmarking and sometimes rewrite articles.  :) At first, it was difficult because I was not familiar with wordpress. Kailangan talaga mag-self study. Now, I am glad that I was finally able to get the hang of things.

For those who would like to work homebased, here are my tips for you:
1.) Aside from Odesk, try to find employers in Craigslist. My grandma got her writing jobs thru craigslist and several of her employer pays really well. In Odesk, sometimes writing jobs can go as low as 1 dollar. However, my grandma's employer can pay her 5-7 dollars for a simple writing job, 15-21 dollars for an average writing job and 50 dollars for a tough writing job. Just try to scout for ads in craigslist even in the US area.  :) You can even try Jobsdb because this is where my mom got her online job.

2.) Practice your skills. As early as now, try to familiarize yourself with simple cropping and photo editing skills in Adobe Photoshop. Try to practice blogging too. These skills would help if you are assigned as a virtual assistant.

3.) Be prepared to have a backup plan. Some online jobs are not permanent. Try to have a backup plan if ever you feel that your employer will not be needing your service anymore. Maybe try to have an online business on the side.

4.) Find ways to entertain yourself. Though you can still go out on weekends, working homebased is different from working in an office. There are times that you will crave for someone to talk to. Your hours will be spent working in front of the computer so it can be boring. Try to find ways to entertain yourself. Since you can bring your work anywhere, it is good to take a vacation too. :)

5.) You must exercise self-discipline. Your boss is miles away so there will be times that you will be tempted to slack off, browse facebook, play online games, etc. Remember that in some jobs like article writing, no work=no pay.

6.) Your work is always there. When you go out of the office, you do not work anymore. Unfortunately, when you work at home, the urge to work is always there. Sometimes you become a slave to the computer. Even if my work is 9am-5pm, sometimes my boss will send me updates in the evening. I would be compelled to reply and do the task.

I hope that these tips will somehow help you.  :) I love working online because I do not have to commute to an office coming all the way from Cavite. My mom and I can also travel anytime. However, I still want to go back to working in an office someday if I find the right opportunity.

Thanks to all who posted and for sharing your stories. They're truly inspiring. :)

Honestly, I consider myself a hard worker, matiyaga at ma-detalye rin. That's why I think having an online job will be perfect for me. Right now, I'm saving up muna. They say that when you resign from your job and plan to start a new career, you must save at least 3 months your salary equivalent, of course, not counting your personal savings. That way, you can have ready cash while waiting for online jobs (should you fail to book jobs immediately after resigning).

Thanks again and good luck to all!
