Help: digicam or dslr?

I got my G11 sa Techno Mall in Korea last June, it's 28k when converted to Php. I checked from Canon recently, it retails 31.5k na lang from 35k. Bumaba na kasi malapit na din i-release yung G12. Later this year or early next year sya magiging available sa Phils

Hi sis, Gseries are bigger than the Lumix LX series. But bigger in a sense that it is not bulkier compared to a DSLR

Compared to s95, mas bulky ang G11. May swivel screen pa kasi yun, you can check out videos on youtube

last year before buying my p&s (canon s90) i was really contemplating on buying a dslr. halos lahat na nga kasi ng friends ko slr na.pero naisip ko i'll study photography first. sayang naman yung dslr kung lagi namang naka "auto"....but now i'm really loving my s90. hindi sya bulky and pwede ko dalin everyday sa bag ko.i tried shooting on manual settings kaso madalas ayoko na mag-isip plus syempre ang mga kodak moments eh biglaan so "auto" talaga default.

i guess in choosing which to buy depends pa rin una sa budget ang kung hilig mo talaga..kasi i have a friend na super buy sya ng canon dslr parang 65k pa nga ata bili nya..tapos nag enroll sya ng photography class...and he said to really get bonggacious pictures he needs to buy lens pa..ang mahal din ng mga lens..parang bumili ka na ng p&s cam.  but syempre if you're really serious into this hobby or you're planning on having this as 2nd job or for whatever reason..kung afford mo naman go lang..nothing compares to the satisfaction you get upon seeing how beautiful your shots are lalo na pag madami pumupuri...but if money is an issue and you take decent shots naman using p&s choose na lang among the prosumer p&s...sabi nga sa mga photography forum "it's the indian not the pana"...

MAJOR MAJOR HELP NEEDED!

I'm also torn between an "intelligent" point and shoot digicam and a basic dslr. I'm already in the verge of buying a brand new D3000 for a little over P20k only (with 18-55mm lens, 4gb memory, bag). was also thinking of canon s90 or lx3 then pero para kasing ang mahal for a PNS camera. they are both almost P20k na din, so kung magcash out na lang din ako ng ganung salapi, dslr na lang di ba?

question is, is my (soon-to-be) Nikon D3000 worth my hard earned P20k? i get to travel at least every quarter (more or less), may mga occasions din left and right...my principle lang naman of having a camera is to Freeze the moment (specially special ones), i'm more into still shots than videos (and i still make prints, 4r lang naman usually). is there a reason not to get that D3000?

i also have a plan to buy a new PNS, since my i-think-3-year-old Exilim is begging to retire already. but that is in the distant future pa.

what do you girls think? GT is a great help and influence to me. your comments will help a lot! Thanks in advance.

share ko lang mga sis. P&S digicam (Sony W-55) owner ako for 3yrs tapos i started travelling (punta dito, punta diyan) ayun d ko na maappreciate ang shots ko dahil ang blurry (when you're in a moving vehicle) at hindi clear. so pinag isipan ko din yung pro's and con's ng DSLR at prosumer cams (S90, G11, etc.) Dahil naha-hassle-an ako magbitbit ng DSLR, i bought a canon S90 since clear na ang kuha, handy at di ako nabibigatan. like rizzie1026 i can bring it everyday, may control ring din naman siya like the DSLR. ako kasi d ko gagamitin pang-career kaya that's the one i bought.

I guess nasa tao na lang din yun what he's after - the quality of shots, kung ica-career mo ba siya or hindi. pati budget mo, isang factor din yun.

Im having the same predicament too whether to buy Nikon D3000 or Lumix LX3. I want to get great night shots ren kasi..lalo na yung mga city scapes na shots.. and I'm torn between these two..

It holds a list of PnS & SLRs (pro & entry-level) so you make a comparison of notes. It depends on what you want it for kasi: easy-carry, nice/quality shots, photo hobbyist or whatever.

IMHO, I wanted to buy a PnS before since I kept on borrowing my mom's digicam for certain occasions. Then when my bro bought a Panasonic G1 as an entry level to having a pro SLR, that's when I decided to get an SLR na lang. He sold his cam & now he's waiting for the release of the Nikon D7k. I just bought my Nikon D3100 3 weeks ago and I'm loving it. Planning to take up basic photography lessons in a few weeks time. And I'll be able to practice kasi my daughter's into ballet, so siya ang magiging subject ko. Aside sa mga occasions or photowalks that I plan to join soon. Magiging magastos nga  lang but in the long run I can look into it as a future career.

If you have budget constraints, then why not buy a digicam that has features like an SLR just like what other sisses mentioned in the earlier posts, di ba? Also, make a list of the pros & cons between the cams you like & look at it in the long-term side. Will you become a photo-hobbyist & would love to take on photography soon? Or will you just use it to capture special moments & what nots?

Naguluhan ka ba? hehe basta, follow your instincts. And look up the other threads similar to this, where other sises had the same dillemma as yours

one of my guidelines is this:

If hindi ako makatulog sa gabi at napapanaginipan ko ang isang bagay, that means i have to have that thing!

and so i bought my entry level dslr, nikon d3000 

sis mchristine, how much ba lx3 ngayun? di yata bababa sa 15k up to 18k if i'm not mistaken, ebay ang lagi kong pinagca-canvass-san e. and bili ko sa d3000 ko, a little over P20k lang kaya i bought it na din!

if you're the type of person na hindi mahilig magbasa at magkalikot ng gadget, pwede ka naman magdslr.    if hinde, magpoint and shoot ka na lang.

kasi ang dslr, it takes patience and practice.  you have to read up on the basic photography principles and techniques...then you have to practice all the time.  if you're going to buy an slr, tapos lalagay mo lang din naman sya sa auto setting, you won't achieve din naman the quality of pics na hinahanap mo.  might as well buy a p&s then click away!

ako kasi, i have both.  if parties lang na magulo and group pics lang kukuhanan ko, i bring my p&s kasi mas handy and kasya sa bag.  but if mga out of town vacations where magaganda ang landscapes, or if i want to take portraits of people, slr syempre.  but of course, i've read a looooooot of articles and even bought photography books so i can maximize it...and syempre lots and lots of practice.

sis, 21k ko nabili yung S90 sa ambassador appliance. same price yan sa hidalgo's (ang camera haven) pag mismong canon store kasi ang mahal nasa 28k. kaya mura yan kasi lumabas na yung s95.

were you able to decide na what to buy?

hi! bought lumix lx5 2 months ago.. the pics are nice but then i'm really not into photography.. i need help on what setting to use to achieve quality / vivid photos when uploaded to facebook..katamad din kasi mag read ng manual hehe..

 i noticed kasi that my pics were not that clear when uploaded to fb, maybe sa setting na use ko?

just bought a Canon Powershot S95. 

it has a 100% rating at www.snapsort.com when compared it LX3 and others. 

i got it for only php 16,400 while its still selling at Php27k in canon stores at the mall.

its perfect --- DSLR quality at a very compact size!!!
