mga sis, another option for yoga enthusiasts

The rise of yoga as a fitness practice has been phenomenal in the past five years alone. Many see yoga as an exercise, others a spiritual practice. Many likewise think yoga is all about contorting the body.
It’s because of this fear that so much of yoga is misunderstood. Yoga is the “science of the breath” as the ancient texts state, and the modern version of postures is merely a part of this.
ECHOstore Sustainable Lifestyle, the pioneering and awarded green fair trade store in Serendra and Podium launches ECHOyoga, its yoga wellness program as expression of nurturing the Self, the Community and the Environment. “ECHO” now means Empowerment, Care, Health and Oneness.
ECHOyoga hopes to demystify and introduce yoga to the absolute beginner through workshops of two to three sessions each. Now everyone can dip their toes into yoga and just give it a try. ECHOyoga workshops build students up for a home practice, grounded on the Body-Mind-Spirit principles of breath, focus and body awareness. All ECHOyoga teachers are trained in Yoga asanas, meditation and breath and have a clear understanding of how to work with special needs and issues. Traditional yoga’s healing and life-changing powers will be shared through ECHOyoga workshops, transmitting the ancient teachings in fun and inspiring ways.
Heading the team of ECHOyoga teachers are ECHOstore Sustainable Lifestyle’s green guru Jeannie Javelosa and ECHOyoga’s Program Director Marilen Elizalde. They were introduced to various forms of yoga by their first teacher Bela Lipat now based in Shanghai, (Javelosa in 1998 and Elizalde in 2002).
Javelosa’s breadth of experience in physical-meditative disciplines such as chi-gong and free movement meditation provide an added dimension and depth of experience to her classes, which she has been teaching for the past eight years. Elizalde, registered with the Yoga Alliance, has been teaching for three years. Over the years, they both have participated in a number of yoga workshops under many visiting international teachers. Both Javelosa and Elizalde are certified teachers from Centered Yoga Institute in Thailand, and have taken courses under Paul Dallagan and O.P. Tiwari. Both have taught with Yoga Manila.
The Beginner Grounding Workshop is one basic workshop to be offered starting April. In four sessions, students are given the basic foundations of breath, grounding and postures they can continue to do at home. This also primes them to better understand the practice no matter which yoga studio they choose to go to after, or follow yoga DVDs available around.
Other ECHOyoga workshops will be taught by a network of certified teachers. These include Big Yoga (for the plus size men and women), Yoga Loca (for the fabulously gay and the gay fabulous), Yoga for the Domestic Goddesses (centering for often harassed housewife), Beginner’s Grounding, Breathe and Meditation, Restorative Yoga, Core Strengthening, and regular classes of Slow Flow and Vinyasa Flow.
Yoga as therapy workshops also focus on Yoga for Midlife, Menopause, Scoliosis and Back Pains, Cancer and Athletes’ issues. Journey into Yoga Discussion Forum focuses on life issues such as impermanence, mind, ego to name a few.
Workshops begin April 6 and will be offered at two venues in Makati City. At Le Bistro Vert Sustainable Foods (Mezzanine), Streetside of Fraser Place, Valero Street, Salcedo Village, the workshop fees include a vegetarian lunch by specially designed by Chef Sau del Rosario for the participants, using fresh ingredients sourced from local farmers and communities. The other venue is Century Plaza (Penthouse), 120 Perea Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City.
