Investing and not failing

Hello! Just wanna ask those who have better knowledge and experience when it comes to investments and savings. About 20+ years ago who knew that pre-need plans would eventually fail, now more and more people are becoming aware that putting your money in the bank is not very wise (safer but not wise), now there's UITFs, bonds, stocks, VULs and more which yields higher returns than just putting your money in the bank. My question is, what are the chances that they will fail like the of the pre-need plans, under what scenarios and consequences. I've got a little extra and do wish to make good use of it by investing and I am planning to invest it for a long time and keep it there.
