We often see rejection as something awful, and it’s something that could leave a mark in your life. Plus, you can receive rejection anywhere–especially at work.

If ever you have been fired from work due to certain reasons or your company suddenly announces a retrenchment from your department, don’t wallow in self-pity and anger, instead, learn to embrace this change. Here’s how:

Learn how to accept it.
Acknowledging it is the first and most important step in handling rejection–you can never think of a solution when you can’t even accept what happened.

Geraldine Downey, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Columbia University says being rejected is terrible because “it communicates the sense to somebody that they're not loved or not wanted, or not in some way valued,” but even so, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world.

Cry your heart out if needed.
If you feel like there is a need to lighten your chest through crying, then you may do so. Remember, crying is not a sign of weakness but rather of strength. Not everyone has the emotional capacity to face what you have gone through.

Clear your head.
After learning to accept what happened and taking out all bad emotions, the next thing you need to do is clear your head. Those haunting ‘what ifs’ can only hurt you and your future plans, so you better stop thinking about those things that will only bring you down. You will only feel worse if you dwell on them.

Create future plans.
Take note of the things that you have learned from this experience. Use those as your spring board in making any future plans. Take this chance to dream big once again and to start anew. Remember, when one door closes, another door opens, so don’t lose hope!

Be grateful that it happened.
No matter how awful it may be, be thankful that it happened. You may not understand it now but sooner or later you will figure out why you needed to go through it. Life is full of challenges and changes are inevitable, but if you always keep a positive attitude you can take whatever life throws at you.
