There are so many options for online courses these days, ranging from different topics to different price points. The promise, of course, is that you can learn anything you want in the confines of your home and at your own pace. But in terms of results, do online courses really offer anything new or are they just nice to have but fall short in delivering value?

To help give you an idea, we asked three women to complete online courses offered by Cream Silk in partnership with Edukasyon.ph. As part of Cream Silk’s #ConditionedForGreater campaign, these programs have been curated to encourage women to develop new skills and pursue more in their chosen careers. Here's what they have to say about their experiences:

Aussy Aportadera, 31, Writer and Yoga Teacher

Course: Increase Productivity at Work

What made you decide to take this course?

"As a freelancer, I work with a flexible and often unpredictable schedule. Some projects also require that I work with other people. I constantly struggle with time management and working more efficiently. I want to learn how to enjoy my day while still being able to produce quality work."

What was your general impression of the course?

"The course was quite light, but substantial. I felt like I was reading an article, but it zeroed in on essential information with the 'Key Takeaways' and quiz portion. It was worth the time I spent on it."

What was the most significant thing you learned from the course?

"Prioritization has been my key takeaway from the entire course. It presented the Eisenhower Matrix as one of the organizational tools that I know I can practically use in my day-to-day activities."

Were there particular realizations you had after completing the course?

"Taking the course reinforced good habits, reminded me of bad ones that I should watch out for, and gave me new management tools to use for better productivity."

What can you say about the course selection?

"It's a great course selection. The courses were varied in terms of duration, module, and coverage. I would revisit this page on my own time and try a different course when my time permits. It's a great initiative and the quality is great."

Bea Carpio, 28, Stylist, Writer, and Social Media Manager

Course: Working with Motion and Time Course

What made you decide to take this course?

"A huge part of my job is creating content and I’m seeing the shift of interest gearing towards videos, whether on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and even new ones like TikTok. I want to learn more about making videos because it’s an important part of my job."

What was your general impression of the course?

"I love it! For starters, I can’t believe it’s free. It’s also very detailed, and they even give you assignments! I love that everything was explained well and clearly, which is super important for people like me who know nothing about video editing."

What was the most significant thing you learned from the course?

"Aside from the technical skills, I like that the course also tackled trends and data. I feel like that’s super important to know because it validates and explains why there is a big opportunity in this field."

Were there particular realizations you had after completing the course?

"I love that it made me realize that I don’t always have to hire a video team or person, and that I am capable of doing things myself, too. Of course, there is still so much to learn and it will take a lot of practice, but this fuelled something in me. Now I’m just excited to see where my new learning will take me. I’m excited to produce more content and share what I’ve learned."

What can you say about the course selection?

"I think it’s super amazing that Cream Silk thought of this. The courses available were all equally relevant, I even had a hard time picking which one to take first. I feel like it gives everyone an opportunity to do better, to keep on learning, and to discover new things about themselves."

Jennifer Chan, 33, Editor

Course: Digital Marketing

What was your general impression of the course?

"The course was easier to digest than I thought. Every video was short and direct to the point, which I liked. However, it would be nice if the module had an advanced version."

What was the most significant thing you learned from the course?

"I've learned to trust my instincts more. After all, everyone has their own way of doing things. Another lesson is that it's okay—and sometimes, more meaningful—to make mistakes. After every video, there's a quick quiz, and while I tried to get a perfect score (as one does), not getting the answers right the first time helped me develop a better understanding of what the creator of the course really wanted me to get right."

Were there particular realizations you had after completing the course?

"The lessons helped validate some of the things that I was already practicing at work and in my personal life. While learning new things is important, being validated counts for as much. I didn't just become more confident though; I became more curious about new things."

What can you say about the course selection?

"I think it's a great project. I've always associated Cream Silk with women empowerment, and this initiative reinforces that association. I feel like the course selection is perfect for someone like me. The roster seems specially designed to mirror my own interests."

Based on a survey conducted by Cream Silk, many Filipinas experience both self-doubt and a lack of resources which keep them from pushing themselves further in their careers. With these courses, Cream Silk hopes to deliver the message that women owe it to themselves to learn new things, develop new skills, and set and achieve higher goals.

If you’re interested in checking out the courses yourself, find them here. Choose from a slew of topics under Business, Art and Design, and Communication categories. If you don’t know where to start, take this quiz to find out which suits you best.
