How would you rate your relationship with your boss? Good, not-so-good, or (eep!) terrible? If you feel like you and your superior could be on better terms, you’re not the only one. According to the Business Insider, a 2013 survey conducted by Harris Interactive shows that “two out of three (66 percent) employees say their direct manager has an impact on their career. Of those, one in five says the boss negatively impacts their career.”

The statistics may not be promising, but you can at least try and do something about it. Check out ways on how to improve your relationship with your boss below:

1. Stop griping.

Focusing on all your boss’s negative traits isn’t going to help your relationship with him/her any, so why waste time complaining to everyone else about them? If you’re really serious about wanting to be on better terms, ditch the foul talk completely.

2. Be more productive at work.

Much of your relationship with your boss hinges on how well you do your job, so concentrate on that first. Arrive to work early, so you’re always the first one in. Organize your work schedule, so you’ll never be late for deadlines.

3. Engage in more face-to-face interaction.

While it might be easier to send your boss an email, it’s also a good idea to talk with him/her personally from time to time. This helps you get to know your boss better and vice-versa. In fact, says that it’s not a bad idea to "connect to your boss on a personal level," as this might improve your professional relations.

4. Keep your voice friendly and pleasant.

When someone speaks to you in an agitated tone of voice, doesn’t it make you respond in kind as well? Use this principle at work and talk to your boss in a friendly and pleasant tone. This makes you instantly more likeable.

5. Be proactive.

Don’t wait for your boss to tell you what to do, especially when it’s already quite obvious. According to the Business Insider, “Knowing you’re on top of things helps make life easier and less stressful for your boss—he doesn’t have to crack the whip to know you’re getting the work done.”
