There are those days when nothing seems to go right in the office – you’re late, you forgot to prepare for a presentation, you got chewed out by your boss, and the promotion you wanted was given to someone else. You can be in the job that you want, but when the proverbial crap hits the fan, you can feel so discouraged that you think the best way to deal with it is to just leave and go home.

Everyone has experienced her share of work-related awfulness, but the key is not to let the bad days push the good days out of your head. Of course, it’s a different thing when you really feel that your job isn’t the best place for you, but if it’s just one of those days of people raining on your parade, then you simply need to help yourself recover.

1. Get up, dress up, and show up.
There’s really no use staying in bed and hiding under the covers when you feel like the worst employee ever. The best way to fight the blues is to get moving. As they say, “fake it until you make it” – if you take a shower, dress nicely, and go to work convincing yourself that you’re productive, chances are you will be, and knowing that you managed to finish something can instantly make you feel better.

2. Don’t take things personally.
If your boss gets mad because of a deal your team failed to close or if your officemate keeps on ranting about the system, there’s really no need to feel bad and to take things personally. It’s not about you; it’s about the situation. Also, it can be something that you can usually fix when you try to remove unnecessary emotional sensitivity out of the equation.

3. Give yourself permission to fail.
People often get discouraged when the things that they do don’t meet their personal standards, but here’s a secret – it’s okay not to meet them all the time. Giving yourself the permission to fail means giving yourself the opportunity to learn about another way of doing things. Failure is just a detour that will lead you to the right path.

4. Think of your goals.
Go back to the reason why you accepted your current job. If at the core of everything that you’ve experienced you're still rallying for the same cause, then hold on to it. Let it put things into their proper perspective. You are where you are because of that reason, and a few setbacks shouldn't stop you from reaching your goals.

5. Remember that you’re somebody else’s hero.
If you feel that you or the work that you do don’t mean much, know that you’re needed. Why else would they hire you, anyway? Strive not just to do well within the limits of your job description, but do your best to help others move forward in their careers, too. You may see yourself as someone small, but you’ll never know how big you really are in the eyes of those whose lives you’ve made better.
