Have something that you want to save up for? Do you need to cut costs at home? Why don’t you ask your mother or your grandmother for advice? After all, they’ve been there; they know how it feels to be in your position. But more importantly, they can actually help you, and they have your best interests at heart. Check out some of these tipid tips from moms and lolas.

1. Always compare prices when you can.

Are you in charge of shopping for groceries at home? Make it a point to check just how much your usual brand preferences are costing you, and then try to look for cheaper alternatives. It might seem like a tedious job, but your grandmother (who is probably already a pro at this) knows best. You’d be surprised at how much you’ll be able to save at the end of a month.

2. Pay yourself first.

As soon as your paycheck arrives, set aside at least five percent of your salary (no matter how small) to go to your savings account. Your mom, who might have opened a savings account for you when you were younger, would definitely say that it's never too early to start saving. Besides, just because you have a stable job now doesn’t mean it’s okay for you to put off building your nest egg.

3. When you see something you like, sleep on it.

It’s tempting to spend your hard-earned cash when you see an adorable dress or a cool top at the mall, but before you make any sudden moves, listen to your mom’s voice inside your head saying, “Sleep on it.” Chances are, the desire to buy whatever it is you want to buy will have dissipated the next day anyway.

4. Learn how to budget.

Do you remember when you used to ask you mom to buy you toys and she would say no? Or the time when the entire family spent a weekend in Batangas? All those decisions were made through careful budgeting. Learn from your mom, and start budgeting everything (yes, even that 1.5 liter of soft drinks you buy every Sunday). By staying on top of all your expenses, you'll be able to save more efficiently.

5. Don’t let your money control you.

Having a lot of cash is great, but don’t allow yourself to be enslaved by it. Caution, your lola would say, is of utmost importance when it comes to money. Is your investment on a roll? Don’t go all the way. Winning at the slot machine three times in a row? Learn to quit when you’re ahead. It’s by knowing when to exercise restraint that you really emerge victorious.
