noy_shalani.jpgMany women dream of being swept off their feet in a grand romance, where they become the most important person in their partners' eyes. The romantic ideal is to put love first and let all other things fall into place. But Shalani Soledad knows that, with President-Apparent Noynoy Aquino, country comes first.

The presidential front-runner and his girlfriend will be prioritizing their responsibilities and functions of their new positions over their relationship. They also emphasized that Shalani will not be taking an official role in Noynoy's administration and will be busy in her role as councilor of Valenzuela City.

In her first interview with Kris Aquino for The Buzz aired Sunday, May 23, Shalani said her relationship with Noynoy is "a deep commitment, pero at this point kasi parang napakalaki noong task na haharapin ni Noy. So ang focus talaga should be on the task ahead of him kasi ang hirap. (We have a deep commitment, but at this point, he has an incredibly huge task ahead of him, and he should focus on that because it's very difficult)."

When Kris asked if she was willing to wait six years before settling down, given that she is already 30 years old, Soledad replied, "I hope."

Although the lack of a formal relationship between them and his sisters' unwillingness to take the position means no one will be filling the shoes of First Lady during his term, Noynoy will not be the first president to go without a partner in Malacañang—his mother met similar challenges, being a widow. This, says historian Manuel Quezon in the TV Patrol World interview shown below, is the right path to take.

And how does Noynoy's family feel about this decision? In the same segment from TV Patrol World, Viel Aquino-Dee says, "It's better if he has a wife so hindi na kaming mga kapatid ang aasahan niya. Sorry to Shalani, pero low priority yata talaga yun [marriage] sa kanya. (It's better if he has a wife so he doesn't have to rely on his siblings. Sorry to Shalani, but I think marriage is really a low priority for him.)"

While the dedication and sense of responsibility professed by these two newly elected officials is admirable, we wonder how many people would put their private lives on hold as they plan to, in order to prioritize their work and duties to their country.
