Bill Bresnan, aged 74, never thought he could keep it up for so long. In an interview with The Huffington Post, the old-school romantic shares that he started sending his wife small notes and letters when they first started dating, but it was only in the early ‘80s when Bresnan decided that he would give his wife a note every night just as they were getting into bed. “We've never gone to bed mad or without kissing. All issues and arguments ended at night. It's one of the keys to a happy marriage. She looks forward to getting the notes every single day,” he says.

Aside from keeping the love strong, the letters were also a great way to help keep the memories alive.

“In our files we can look back and see what we did on any exact date and see a card, note and scribble saying we were on a cruise or at a dinner, so it's a combination of a diary and love diary together. Every single one is an expression of love,” he says.

Want to keep the love alive in your own relationship? Check out these tips below!

Make it a point to be a better couple every day.
If you’re in a long-term relationship, it’s easy to fall back on a dull and boring routine. But if you come up with daily relationship resolutions—be it leaving each other little surprises or spending more quality time together—you can avoid taking each other for granted.

Don’t let the kids kill the romance.
Now that you have children, your priorities have understandably changed, but that doesn’t mean you and your hubby can’t have date nights every once in a while. Dinner at one of the nicer restaurants sans the little ones every Friday, for example, can keep you and your husband’s bond strong.

Make the first move.
Waiting for your man to make a grand gesture? Why not beat him to the punch by planning a romantic weekend getaway or having his favorite pizza delivered to his office one Monday morning ? After that, it’s his move.
