Couples who perpetually text sweet nothings to each other may seem undeniably in love, but according to a new study featured on TIME, their constant communication doesn't necessarily mean that they're as joined at the hip in real life.

Researchers surveyed 276 men and women in their early 20s and found that men who texted their significant others more often were generally unhappier than those who texted less frequently. Experts speculate that as the quality of the relationship suffers, men may feel the need to disconnect through texting, a less intimate form of communication, instead of resolving things personally.

On the other hand, women tend to use their smartphones as a way to talk with their men, especially when there are issues that need resolving. Therefore, communication lines seem more open when a relationship is becoming rocky.

Of course, just because you and your man send each other multiple messages a day doesn’t mean that there is trouble in paradise as long as you remember that it's not how often couples text each other, but what they text each other that really matters.
