Although there is nothing wrong with enhancing your natural features with makeup, a new study published in The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology found that men (and women) find those who have less makeup more attractive.

The researchers drafted 44 models and took a before and after makeup shot. Then, photos were edited to give each model a different makeup look where they were shown to 44 people–22 male and 22 female participants.

They found that most of the male individuals chose a more “natural-looking” face rather than a fully made one. The researchers are also concluding that most women put on makeup because of the alleged standard of beauty that may not even be real.

“Taken together, these results suggest that women are likely wearing cosmetics to appeal to the mistaken preferences of others. These mistaken preferences seem more tied to the perceived expectancies of men, and, to a lesser degree, of women,” the authors wrote.

So, whether you prefer going out fully made up or bare-faced, how you look shouldn’t be a determining factor when it comes to attraction–you can like a person no matter how he or she looks. Remember, beauty is only skin deep.
