When you experience a heartbreaking event, sometimes all you need is to talk and talk about your feelings and experience. What did they find out? That you have to use the word "you" when you're talking about your feelings, instead of talking about them in first person.

In the study, the participants were asked to write about their painful experiences and most of them used the word "you" to tell their stories without being told to do so. Later, they asked them to write about lessons, telling some to use "you/your" and the others to use "I/me." Those who used "you/your" ended up going through their experiences "with less heartache and more psychological distance."

We know that writing about your experiences really help you deal with them, but this is new to us! We didn't even realize that when we write, we usually use "you" instead of "I," which makes dealing with painful situations better. Think of it as our way of separating from what we've been through... and that, to us, is a first step to actually moving and eventually, letting go.
