Mother’s Day comes but once a year, and while we should all show our moms how much we appreciate her every day, May 12 is when we should really bring out the big guns. Flowers, chocolates, a gorgeous necklace—these are all wonderful gifts, but how about we kick things up a notch? Give your mom a real good surprise; check out these ideas:

1. Surprise her with a special visit.

If you’ve been away for quite some time, give your mom the surprise of her life by dropping by unannounced at home. Make the five-hour drive or book a flight ASAP, but make sure she has no idea that you’re coming. Tell her you have exams to study for or that you have a lot of paperwork to catch up on; tell her anything as long as she doesn’t get a whiff of your sneaky plan. In fact, why don’t you check out these videos from The Huffington Post? They can give you a preview (lots of crying, screeching, and jumping around) as well as tips (must have video camera on standby) for your homecoming surprise.

2. Organize a flash mob.

If your mom is a fan of Oprah, then she would have surely caught the amazing flash mob on the host’s 24th season special on TV or at least heard about the Black Eyed Peas’ and the audience’s super cool performance. This Mother’s Day, why not organize a flash mob just for her? Choose the perfect time and place, secure the necessary permits, and gather your soldiers, a.k.a. friends and relatives, together. Choreograph a dance (to a song that’s obviously for your mom), and watch her slowly come to the realization that this whole thing was orchestrated especially for her. If you need help with the steps, you can check out Oprah.com’s easy step-by-step guide for a template dance.

3. Create the perfect morning

Mornings aren’t always the best time of the day, especially for busy moms. Make May 12 a truly special day by making sure she has the smoothest, albeit somewhat surreal, morning ever. Start by waking up early and preparing her a grandiose breakfast. Have someone come to do her hair and makeup (we’re not kidding) to make her feel totally pampered. Rent (or borrow) a beautiful car to take her to work in record time. With all your hard work, she'll have the best Mother's Day morning ever.
