Can we all just admit that meeting a significant other’s parents is one of the most nerve-racking moments in any person’s life? For both people involved! And for those of you who don’t lose sleep over this—stop bragging, ugh. We came up with some tips to help relieve some of the tension and anxiety for when the big day comes. After all, as much as we hate to admit it, first impressions matter.
1. Build up your partner’s confidence.
Even before the actual meeting, reassure bae! Remind him that there’s a reason why you fell in love with him, so there’s no reason your parents won’t as well. This will keep things light, and hopefully, all those positive qualities you love so much will shine through.
2. Do the prep work.
Let your significant other know ahead of time any weird family traditions or topics he should avoid. What might be a casual remark from your partner can open the floodgates. Make him a list of sensitive issues to never bring up!
3. But don’t overwhelm him.
Everyone has baggage! While little secrets and family quirks might be helpful, try not to bog him down with negative references. If you only bring up the bad stuff, he might be unnecessarily overwhelmed. For him to put his best foot forward, he needs to walk into this without negative expectations.
4. Keep the first meeting as short as possible.
It’s a big deal, but it doesn’t have to be a five-course meal, and it certainly doesn’t have to be during a special occasion like an anniversary party or Christmas Eve. There might be additional pressure to be amazing during a big, family gathering compared to a small, casual dinner. You get where we’re going with this?
5. Don't leave them alone.
We know you want to see if bae survives the night, but tossing him over to your brothers is a no-no. You don’t have to stay glued the entire time, but checking in on him and never being gone for too long will keep him calm. Plus, it’s so easy to get lost in the crowd, especially in a big family. Let him know you’ve got his back.
6. Tell him to bring something. Anything!
Do we really need to tell you how important this is?
7. Show him you’re chill.
If you don’t panic, he’ll think there’s no reason to—even if you have to fake it and you’re actually emotionally sweating buckets.
8. Remind him that it’s still your call.
Sure, life is easier when everyone’s happy and getting along, but we’re not all that lucky. If you’re sure about the person you want to bring home to mom and dad, then that’s all that matters.
