As a general rule, you're not supposed to stay in constant communication with your ex, especially when the breakup is still so fresh. After all, how else are you two supposed to move on with your lives? But, there are instances when it's appropriate for you to send a text or two. Here, a list of things you may need to tell him.

I still have your mother's engagement ring.
Gifts that were given to you during your relationship—say, earrings or love letters—don’t have to be returned. However, baby pictures, old basketball jerseys, and, yes, his mother’s engagement ring need to be sent back. He may not have asked for them, but it's common courtesy to return important personal and family heirlooms.

You'll be okay.

Has your ex been telling you that he can't live without you or that he can't move on? Tell him that he'll be fine and then leave it at that. Don't allow yourself to be emotionally blackmailed into doing anything you're not comfortable with. If you're really worried that he might do something stupid, inform his friends or his family right away.

I’m pregnant.
You may have cut ties with your ex, but if you find out that you’re with child, then you need to let him know. It doesn’t mean that you have to get back together with him, but like it or not, you have to give him the option of staying in the baby’s life.

I’m sorry for calling you all those names.
Words, especially those said in a fit of anger, can never be taken back, but apologizing may help pave the way for a more civil relationship in the future.

I’m sorry for cheating on you.
Men who get cheated on feel insecure and inadequate, among other things. Saying sorry won’t change what happened, but it may help your ex heal.

I can't forgive you right now.

Just because your ex has apologized a hundred times doesn't mean that you have to forgive him. This isn't you holding on to a grudge, but you just being honest.

Thank you for letting me go.

Sometimes, you're the one who just needs closure. If texting him one last time is going to help you seal that chapter of your life close, then by all means, do so.
