Relationships are volatile, no matter how many of us believe in forever. To stay together, you need a lot of patience, trust, balance, friendship, and love. If one of these fall short, things may start becoming messy. At times, it’s pretty obvious when you need to jump off a sinking ship, but there are still instances when you fail to realize that you’re about to drown.

If you already feel uncomfortable in the relationship you’re in, but you’re unsure whether or not you should walk out the door, here are a few signs that can help you make your decision.

1. You’re running out of topics to talk about.
Communication is a vital part of any relationship, and this doesn’t only encompass those deep one-on-ones. Small talk is equally important, as this helps keep you close. Grocery chit-chat and private jokes help establish and maintain familiarity, thus when you find yourself needing to think of conversation topics that both of you would be interested in, then it means you’ve fallen out of sync. If this has been going on for quite some time and time together only seems awkward, then you may need to start thinking about going your separate ways.

2. You’re not looking forward to seeing each other.
No matter the years, people in a happy and healthy relationship always look forward to spending time with one another. However, if you find that coming home to your partner feels more like a chore than a relief, then it could be time to reevaluate the reason behind it. Is it because your relationship has become repetitive, or is it because your interests now lie elsewhere? Pinpointing where things have gone wrong can help both of you either fix your situation or realize that you need to get out of it.

3. Sex is consistently unsatisfying.
There is such a thing as "obligatory sex," and yes, it happens in long-term relationships. But if every supposedly steamy session has become an unfeeling routine, then something may be wrong. Oftentimes, spicing up your sex life can help bring back the spark you’ve lost, but if your dissatisfaction can’t be reconciled, then you probably need to consider your options.

4. You argue about the littlest things way too often.
Every couple has had their share of shouting matches, but routine fights may be caused by unresolved issues. It’s one thing to argue about forgetting to wash the dishes, but when an undone chore becomes a springboard for deep-seated anger—the only thing left to do is to walk away.

5. You don’t argue at all.
Not having anything to argue about is as damaging as always having something to butt heads over. Not engaging in altercations with your partner may mean that you’re just keeping all the hurt inside until you one day explode or you simply don’t care. Either way, you’re both in trouble, and your supposedly peaceful relationship is just the deep breath before the horrible, horrible plunge.

6. You don’t feel that you’re growing as a person.
Relationships should bring out the best in both parties. The best ones give you all the room you need to grow. If your relationship is the reason as to why you’re not developing into your full potential, then maybe it’s time to move on.

7. You’ve drifted apart.
There comes a point when a relationship has given both of you as much as it could give. It’s nobody’s fault; it’s just that all good things must come to an end, and for the both of you, your story may have a different sort of ever after. Drifting apart may mean that you’ve both already started to grow separately, and although it’s sad, you need to give each other proper space for you to develop, and that means, you’ll need to let each other go.
