Formerly called Kankabatok, the capital of Leyte and gateway to Eastern Visayas was renamed Tacloban in 1813. A favorite fishing haunt, its name originated from the word taklub, a bamboo contraption used to catch fish, shrimp, and crab. This tourism hub, which once served as the capital of the Philippines when Manila was under the control of the Japanese, is only an hour-long plane ride away from Manila, making it a great getaway for culture lovers.

If you’re planning to explore Tacloban, make sure to visit during the month of June, when the city enjoys a week-long celebration in honor of the Tacloban Fiesta. And while you're there, don’t forget to maximize your Tacloban experience by doing these three activities!
