Nothing beats the satisfaction of reaching the summit of a mountain and reveling in its majestic view after hours (or even days) of climbing and camping with your hiking crew. Whether you’re a beginner or a veteran climber, scaling heights can be a great release of stress.
So don’t delay your trip any longer and check out this new bucket list of local mountains to climb this summer, as recommended by our Girtalkers. Make sure to pick the right mountain for your skill level based on the difficulty, height, and estimated time to summit. Don’t forget to research and train before heading out!
Mt. Maculot – Cuenca, Batangas
Difficulty 4/9, 930 MASL (Meters Above Sea Level)
2-4 hours to summit
Mt. Maculot is perfect for first-time hikers planning a day trip. If you're a little hesitant about hiking all the way to the summit on your first try, aim for the Rockies instead (difficulty 3/9), the spot Maculot is most known for, which will give you a great view of Taal Lake.
Mt. Kapugan – Kiangan, Ifugao
Difficulty 3/9, 1,305 MASL
2 hours to summit
For those interested in going up north, you can maximize this trip not only by completing the hike, but by exploring the town of Kiangan as well. Take a tour of the Ifugao Museum and make your way to Pangaggawan Cave for an amazing outdoor experience.
Mt. Batulao – Nasugbu, Batangas
Difficulty 4/9, 811 MASL
2-4 hours to summit
Batulao is a pleasant mountain to hike with a well-maintained trail that isn't too tiring if your pace is comfortable. It's a great place to bring friends who don't mind conversing during long walks. Batulao is most known for its rolling slopes, so be sure to bring your (lightweight) cameras for a group snap!
Mt. Talamitam – Nasugbu, Batangas
Difficulty 3/9, 630 MASL
1.5 - 2.2 hours to summit
Right next to Batulao is Talamitan, perceived to be a slightly more challenging hike than Batulao by some. While the view may not be as grand as Batulao's rolling slopes, it's not without its own charm. In fact, if you're more experienced, it might be worth a shot to hike the two mountains in a day!
Mt. Ampacao - Sagada, Mt. Province
Difficulty 2/9, 1,889 MASL
1.5 hours to summit
Mt. Ampacao is the highest point in Sagada, and one of the easier mountains to hike on this list. While the weather is one of the best reasons to visit the mountain, make sure to allot enough time to explore the rest of Sagada, too, like the Bomod-Ok Falls and Sumaguing Cave.
Mt. Makiling - Los Baños, Laguna
Difficulty 4/9, 1,090 MASL
4-5 hours to summit
There's a lot to explore along Mt. Makiling's trail from UPLB, so summiting doesn't have to be your ultimate goal. In fact, you may want to spend some time exploring the UPLB campus, as well as all the interesting restaurants nearby, such as Ashoka and Mio Cucina.
Mt. Gulugod-Baboy – Anilao, Mabini, Batangas
Difficulty 2/9, 525 MASL
1-2 hours to summit
Up for a night of camping? Mt. Guglugod Baboy is one of your best bets. If you're looking for other nearby places to visit, check out Sombrero Island nearby!
Mt. Romelo - Siniloan, Laguna
Difficulty 2/9, 240 MASL
2-3 hours to summit
Mt. Romelo is perfect for those who like mountains, but looove waterfalls, as there are several of them you can visit. Some popular ones are Buruwisan, Batya-Batya and Sampaloc Falls.
What to Pack and Other Reminders
For day trips, make sure to bring enough water and some snacks for the trail. You might also want to consider bringing a packed lunch you can enjoy once you summit, as long as you don't forget to have breakfast first. Prepare yourself by doing some warm-ups the day before (especially if you haven't worked out in a while) and the morning of the hike. Make sure to bring a first aid kit, in case of emergencies, and be sure to wear sunblock to keep your skin protected. Do as much research as you can prior to your trip, and save emergency contact numbers on your phone.
There, you are all set! Time to gear up and go on a new adventure! If you’re looking for reviews on these mountains and more, read about other women's experiences on GirlTalk.
