Itineraries are good guides when you travel, but you don’t have to follow them to the dot to get a wonderful travel experience. Exploring on your own and discovering things by yourself are the beauty of traveling. Here are five things to remember to do when you find yourself in a new place.

1. Try out local delicacies.
We can all be picky sometimes, and this is why we usually plan where to eat in a new destination. But why not throw caution to the wind and try something new? Local delicacies are delicacies for a reason, so find out why by having them for your next meal.

2. Talk to the locals.
It’s the people who live in the place you are visiting who are the most knowledgeable about it. Your research on the net can be substantial, but first-hand accounts are always the best. Locals know all the secrets, so make friends in every place you visit.

3. Go to local events.
You should consider local events rather than tourist sites to visit the next time you go on a trip. These places will most likely still be there the next time you’re there, but events only happen at a particular time and place, so if you happen to be free in time for a festival, take the opportunity and attend one.

4. Shop in a public market.
A new place offers a lot more than new sites to see. You can also enjoy fruits, vegetables, and meat you won’t find in your hometown—and they might even be available at cheaper prices. Shop around, and you may be surprised by the things you find.

5. Get a map and get lost.
A map can show you a lot, but it can’t tell you the secrets each place you’re visiting holds. Use a map as a guide in case you get lost, but consider going around and seeing where a random road will take you. The best treasures aren’t always mapped out.
