Many of us have that one room in the house that serves a variety of functions—that living room that is also a play area, that spare bedroom that somehow turned into a bodega, or that dining room that serves as the kids’ study area. But few rooms can claim that they’ve been through as much as the one occupied by Real Living’s winning family: the space used to be rented out and, through the years, has housed a party-needs store, a parlor, a storeroom, and an RTW store, to name a few.
The family have been living in the space for about two years. The room in question serves as a studio apartment of sorts for the family, with a sleeping area, living area, play area, even a small dining area. In his makeover entry, the father narrates, “Using my little know-how on carpentry (and more importantly, to save on costs), I have repaired the ceiling and the walls, painting it a light shade of aqua blue. But despite my efforts to rearrange the furniture, the room is simply too cramped.”
He goes on to write about the leaky roof that resisted repair.
Real Living tapped designer Hannah Acab-Faustino to work on this multi-functional space. Hannah, who has worked on previous makeovers, wanted to give the family an appropriate space for their activities. Read on to see how she turned the space from a storeroom into a home.
