The winning family of Real Living’s home makeover had their house renovated in 2003; due to a lack of funds, it remained unfinished until 2007. In her makeover entry, the letter sender wrote: “To date, our living-lanai areas have no furniture where we can supposedly lounge around, [and] we are still using our old dining table which really doesn’t match the (supposedly) Zen look of our house.”

Since she was after the Zen look, the interiors were done up in mostly white and dark wood. Although the style espouses minimalism, the family’s home seemed to take it a bit too far—there simply wasn’t any furniture in the living area! That's why it was turned into a play area for the kids. “I wanted to spend a lot of time there, I wanted a place to lounge around,” says the home owner. “I just didn’t know what to do with it!”

Find out how interior designer Michelle Dumlao solved all the of the home’s problems in this amazing makeover.
