During Halloween, ghosts and ghouls, witches and warlocks, monsters and mistresses monstresses all want to party. Short of decorating your home with garlic, make sure they bypass your private function by keeping away from the usual blood and gore they oh-so-love. Here are a few tips on how to keep things chic.

1. Send out the invites early.
Your invites set the tone of your party. If you hand out black and orange DIY-like-a-child-made-it kind of invitations, then your guests will interpret them accordingly. Make sure to mail it out ahead of time, too, so every one of your invitees can make time for your event.

2. Keep away from the gruesome.
Leave the horror and the gore to the haunted houses and go for more tasteful Halloween décor at your party. Instead of Jack-o-lanterns, try glitter pumpkins.

3. Set a theme.
Want to keep the Miley Cyruses (no offense, Paris) out of your party? Set a theme. Get everyone to come in their best little black dress—something that Wednesday Addams would approve of—for a stylish vibe.

4. Serve only the best cocktails.
On another night, sipping drinks like the brain hemorrhage (which freakishly does seem like what you’d expect a brain hemorrhage to look like) and the black widow might be fun, but for a chic Halloween party, make a toast with something more sparkly than, you know, something that’s just disgusting.

5. Pay homage to the classics.
Make use of that big LED screen and put classic scenes from movies like Dracula, The Birds, or King Kong on repeat for your guests to enjoy. You can keep it on mute if you already have a great DJ playing at home or turn the volume up so that everyone can watch the movies in all their suspenseful perfection.
