No matter how much you keep your home clean, bad odors can still sneak up to you. Cat litter boxes, dirty carpets, and musty cabinets can emit untowardly smells, and they get harder to remove unless you do something about them fast.

The ready solution is to buy a can of air freshener and go on a spritzing spree, but if you’re looking for other alternatives, here are five that can help.

1. Charcoal
If you’re wondering why your mom kept on putting pieces of charcoal in your fridge back in the day, it’s because charcoal is a natural, non-toxic deodorizer. To keep your home from smelling musty, you can either put charcoal briquettes in small trays or make pouches of them using old socks and distribute them around the house.

2. Baking Soda
Baking soda is famous for being able to clean almost anything, but it’s also an effective anti-odor agent. Sprinkling baking soda on your carpet, kitchen table tops, and even inside stinky shoes can help eliminate icky odors. Just make sure that the box says "baking soda" (bicarbonate of soda) and not "baking powder", as these are two different things.

3. Citrus Peelings
Anything citrusy can be used to deodorize areas in your home that don’t smell right. You can place lemon and orange peelings in your bathroom, your kitchen, and even in your garbage area. The scent of peelings doesn’t last long, but it does the job.

4. Essential Oils
Aside from making your home smell heavenly, essential oils are also great it setting different moods. Lavender and chamomile relaxes, while anything citrusy such as lemon and orange helps perk things up. To use, you put a few drops of your chosen oil in any regular-sized spritzer and spray as desired. The more drops you put in, the stronger the scent will be.

5. Potpourri

Store-bought potpourri does the trick, but did you know that you can make your own? Simply simmer lemon slices, your choice of herbs, and a few drops of your favorite essential oil in a saucepan filled with water. Your home will already smell heavenly while it’s cooking! Once done, let it cool a little before placing in small mason jars with holes on the cap. When the brew loses its potency, you can always make another batch.
