When you put an object away either inside a cabinet or a closet drawer, you probably have every intention of seeing it again. However, there are times when your stuff seem to vanish into thin air. Some items, once stored, don’t resurface until after a few months later. This is fine if you’re just missing half of a pair of socks, but what if the item in question is an important document, like your child’s birth certificate or a property deed?

Don’t put yourself through that stress. Instead, start storing your things more efficiently. Here are a few tips that might help.

1. Don’t mix personal with professional.

Buy plastic envelopes for personal documents and another set for business documents. You can keep them in the same drawer, but never all together. Sorting through them will not be as easy as you think, especially when you're pressed for time.

2. Label all storage boxes.

You might not think it's useful now, but give your memory a month or two, and you’ll thank us for telling you to put labels on everything.

3. Make sure everyone in the family knows where to put what.

Pots and pans are stored inside the bottom cabinets, while plates and other tableware are stored above. Make sure everyone knows the drill, so there are lesser chances of misplacing anything important.

4. Keep your system logical.

Anything that has to do with eating should be kept inside the kitchen. Anything to do with academics should be stored in the library. By keeping things simple and logical, you’ll have an easier time figuring out where you usually store a particular object.

5. Create a master list.

If you don’t trust your memory, make a list of where certain items are kept. Keep the existence of the list to yourself, so you wouldn't attract any unwanted attention. You can even write your list in code; just don’t forget how to decipher it!
