Do you eat stress for breakfast? If your office environment gets you all worked up with deadlines, grumpy bosses, and demanding clients every single day, then you may want to find ways to relax, as research published in the online-access journal PLoS ONE indicates that you’re more likely to experience a heart attack than any other woman.

According to a study on 22,000 female professionals in the US that spanned 10 years, those who experience job strain have a 67-percent risk of having a heart attack and a 38-percent risk of having other cardiovascular conditions, compared to those who experience less work-related tension. Lead researcher Dr. Michelle A. Albert at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School defines job strain as a form of psychological stress that can cause emotional imbalance as well as long-term heart ailments.

The study may have been done in the US, but the reality of stress is very much present in the Philippine corporate setting as well. In order to avoid getting burned out, give yourself time to relax. Within the day, allot a few minutes for your brain to rest by walking around, grabbing something to munch on, or helping out one of your colleagues. If you can, make sure that your weekend is work-free. Eat a good diet and get enough exercise and sleep in order for your body to recuperate. Not only will these help lessen the strain on your heart, but will also make you more efficient in the workplace.
