If you’re wondering whether you should sign up for yoga sessions or take up a sport, here’s a bit of info that might help you make a decision. According to a study featured on Prevention.com, people who practice yoga may benefit from a better memory.

Researchers tested two groups of adults on mental skills such as multitasking and problem solving. They then divided the participants into two groups; one group did gentle yoga for 60 minutes three times a week, while the other did strengthening and stretching exercises for the same duration. Eight weeks later, the researchers tested everyone’s cognitive skills again. Results showed that those who did yoga performed significantly better than the other group.

Study author Neha Gothe, PD, believes it has something to do with the mind-body element of yoga. “While practicing yoga, you’re not just moving your body,” she says, “you’re focused on your breath and mindfully aware of your postures.”

Not yet convinced? Past studies also show that yoga practitioners develop better accuracy and reaction times, prevent high blood pressure, and even regulate heartbeat.
