Here’s one more good reason to stock up on tomatoes. According to Science Daily, they may help lower the risk of breast cancer among at-risk postmenopausal women.

Researchers examined 70 postmenopausal women who were asked to consume at least 25mg of lycopene every day for 10 days, and at least 40 grams of soy protein daily for another 10.

Those who had a daily dose of lycopene increased their adiponectin levels by 9 percent. Adiponectin is a hormone that helps maintain proper glucose levels and assists in fatty acid breakdown in the body.

“The advantages of eating plenty of tomatoes and tomato-based products, even for a short period, were clearly evident in our findings,” first author Adana Llanos explains.

“Eating fruits and vegetables, which are rich in essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals such as lycopene, conveys significant benefits. Based on this data, we believe regular consumption of at least the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables would promote breast cancer prevention in an at-risk population.”
