When you open your browser, what is the first thing that you usually do? If your answer is to check your Facebook account, you're not alone. According to one study, 85 percent of participants who answered a poll admitted that using Facebook has become part of their regular routine.

Considering that this is the age of social media, it would be more surprising if people answered otherwise. Still, is this devotion to Mark Zuckerberg’s billion-dollar idea healthy? Some researchers don’t think so. Women, in particular, might benefit from spending some time away from their Facebook wall. Apparently, the more time they spend on the site, the unhappier they become.

In a study involving 600 female participants, researchers discovered that more than half experienced increased body consciousness when using the social networking site. About the same number compared themselves to others when reading status messages or viewing pictures. A little under half of the participants said they wished they had the faces or the bodies of the people they were viewing, while a third admitted they felt sad when they started comparing themselves to other people.

All in all, Facebook doesn’t seem to be doing women any favors. As easy it is to blame Facebook for everything, however, how you handle the situation is ultimately up to you. In the end, what's most important is that you learn to love yourself. Take some time out from Facebook for some self-reflection, and if you need help boosting your self-esteem, get support from your loved ones.
