A new study featured on Medical News Today shows that patients with hypertension may turn to yoga to help normalize their blood pressure levels.

Dr. Debbie Cohen of University of Pennsylvania, together with a team of researchers, worked with 58 men and women between ages 38 to 62 to evaluate the effects of yoga. The participants were divided into three groups: the first underwent a supervised diet-based weight reduction and walking program; the second practiced yoga two to three times in 24 weeks; and the third did a combination of the two.

The results showed that the yoga group experienced a significant drop in blood pressure greater than the other two groups.

Researchers believe that one reason behind this positive effect is the meditative aspect of yoga. Its concept of relaxation and mindfulness puts the body at ease, which could lower blood pressure. So if you’re looking for a de-stressing and healthy workout routine, you might want to give yoga a try.
