Is losing a few pounds one of your New Year's resolutions? You're not alone. A couple of moms share their proven yet simple methods on losing weight. The best part? It does not involve extreme dieting.

Mom to 3 boys, Kristine Belamide says her secret to losing weight is simply portion control and staying away from unhealthy food. “Dieting is effective. Definitely, papayat ka but you can't keep it up forever dahil mahirap i-mantain,” she says.

“The healthiest way to lose or maintain your ideal weight is eating and living healthy. Eat the right amount of food that your body requires. I try to target 1,200 calories per day. I avoid eating junk food, sodas and too much sweets,” she adds.

Yolly Darlucio, mom of 2, has a stricter method, however. “No more solid intake after 6 p.m. for me. I also drink tea after every meal.” Mint and Oolong tea are great after-meal teas as they help reduce bloating. Also, remember to wait an hour after a meal before drinking any kind of tea. “And of course, I exercise daily,” says Yolly.

Another mom, Cher Gavilan-Tuason, is all for exercising. “Running is best for me—I can eat anything, but of course in moderation,” says Cher.

Evelyn Sanidad, mom of 2, says walking did the trick for her. “I also hula hoop. It's a fun way to exercise whenever I don't have the time to walk.” And, she’s right. According to Mayo Clinic, hula hooping for at least 10 minutes a day provides similar results as other types of aerobic exercises, helping you meet the recommended exercise goals of 150 minutes a week as advised by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Many swear by warm water with lemon as a great and simple way to lose weight. Mom to 2, Alecx Serrano-Arora is one of them. “Drink warm water with lemon first thing in the morning and tea with lemon before going to bed. I've been doing that for a few months now and I'm enjoying the health benefits,” she says.

There may be some truth to this lemon water business. According to preventive medicine specialist Roxanne Sukol, MD, lemon water “works with the body to nourish and to enhance proper function.” It helps your body absorb the nutrients from the food you eat. Plus it’s a good way to get your daily dose of vitamin C, she says.

A mom to 2, Mavic Torres, follows the “eat breakfast like a king” rule. “I eat a heavy and balanced breakfast, a moderate lunch and a super light meal for dinner.” Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.

Great light dinner meals consist of complex carbohydrates like whole wheat bread, green leafy vegetables, popcorn and fruit, according to Stephanie Maxson, senior clinical dietician at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the University of Texas in the U.S. These will help stabilize your blood sugar levels so you don’t feel sluggish and groggy in the morning, she explains.

Janet Castillo, mom of 1, turns to water; and a good amount of it, too. “Lots and lots of water is good for hydration and detoxification,” she says. “I also have warm water instead of cold water during meals. It helps rinse off the oil intake.”

Another helpful tip: water helps with constipation and bloating. If you’re having those pesky problems, it will do you good to always have a water bottle within arm’s reach.

Mom to a 1-year old daughter, Carissa San Diego highly recommends breastfeeding to other new moms who want to lose a bit of postpartum weight. “Breastfeeding can burn up to 500kcal a day!” she exclaims. “I unli-latch (meaning she latches as long as her daughter wants to) and I observe a proper diet. I avoid junk food as much as I can.”

Dr. Connie Alfiler, who practices obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical Plaza in Mandaluyong, agrees with her. “Breastfeeding really is the number one way to shed pounds (for new moms) because it uses up the reserved food stores or fats (gained) during pregnancy,” she explains in a Smart Parenting article. Aside from burning those 500 calories, it also releases hormones that enable your uterus to return to its normal size.
