Time.com published an article stating that a study has discovered certain medications that can get rid of alcoholism.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers tested certain FDA-approved drugs in the USA on alcohol dependents. The team discovered that acamprosate (Campral) and naltrexone (Revia), along with psychological treatment, were effective in helping alcohol dependents stop drinking. At present, doctors prescribe either drugs or treatment to the patients, but rarely both. Apart from the two mentioned drugs, nalmefene (Selincro) and topiramate (Topamax), can also aid patients in putting the bottle down.
The probability of early death is increased by three times when one is alcohol dependent. Apart from organ damage, alcoholism destroys the liver, brain, and other organs; can affect one's relationship with others; and cause fatal accidents. This discovery may reduce the number of alcoholism-related deaths in the future.
