While some women prefer taking pills and/or condoms for safety and birth control, there are others who use the pull-out method or the technique of a man withdrawing his member before ejaculation. The question is, is it safe and effective?

According to a study from Duke University, it’s not as reliable as the other methods. “Our study showed that use of withdrawal for contraception is very common, but it doesn't work as well as other methods,” said study author Dr. Annie Dude, a resident in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, N.C.

Meanwhile, Lauren F. Streicher, M.D., clinical associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University and author of Sex Rx: Hormones, Health, and Your Best Sex Ever says that withdrawing has a high failure rate and should not even be considered as an option. Why? Even if a man pulls out in time, there is still a possibility of pregnancy because of the pre-ejaculated sperm. So if you and your partner are still not ready to have a child, be open and willing to try other options that are more effective than pulling out.
